Thinking about machine creativity and its reflection in the work of Cohen, Moura and Grosser

Abstract:

V bakalářské diplomové práci „Myšlení o kreativitě strojů a jeho reflexe v tvorbě Cohena, Mouri a Grossera“ se zabýváme debatou o inteligentních umělých systémech rozvíjenou prostřednictvím konceptu „kreativního stroje“. S odvoláním na „Mondrianův experiment“ Michaela Nolla inspirovaný Turingovým testem „umělé inteligence“ zkoumáme algoritmickou podstatu tvůrčího procesu kreslicích strojů současnosti (včetně jejich předchůdců v 18. století), koncept autonomie strojů (P. Weibel) a pojem „metakreativity“ (M. Whitelaw). Teoretické postuláty aplikujeme na vybraná díla patřící do oblasti robotického umění: Aarona od Harolda Cohena, Interaktivní robotický kreslicí stroj (Interactive Robotic Painting Machine) Bena Grossera nebo na Robotického akčního malíře (Robotic Action Painter) Leonela Mouri. Metodou komparace uvedených případů hledáme odpověď na otázku, jakým směrem se posunul diskurz „kreativních strojů“ od prvních experimentů, které zastupuje Nollův estetický experiment, do současnosti.

Abstract:

In the bachelor thesis "Thinking about machine creativity and its reflection in the work of Cohen, Moura and Grosser" we consider a debate on artificial intelligence systems developed through the concept of "creative machines". Referring to the Michael Noll's "Mondrian experiment" inspired by the Turing test of "artificial intelligence" we examine algorithmic nature of the creative process of today's drawing machines (and their predecessors in the 18th century), the concept of machine autonomy (P. Weibel) and the term "metacreation" (M. Whitelaw). We apply theoretical postulates to the selected works of robotic artists: Aaron by Harold Cohen, Interactive Robotic Painting Machine by Ben Grosser or Robotic Action Painter by Leonel Moura. By comparison of these cases we seek to answer the question what direction has the discourse of "creative machines" shifted from the first experiments, which represents Noll's aesthetic experiment, to the present.
