Geophysics in GIS as a tool for the identification of archeological objects

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje využití nedestruktivních metod při identifikaci archeologických objektů. Ve specifických podmínkách aridního pouštního prostředí lokality Abúsír čekají některé památky dokonce tisíce let na své objevení. Nejvyužívanějšími metodami pro vyhledávání těchto památek je vedle klasického terénního průzkumu metoda dálkového průzkumu Země (DPZ), která poskytuje zcela odlišný úhel pohledu na krajinu, a také geofyzikální prospekce, díky které lze objevovat i objekty skryté pod povrchem. S vývojem moderních technologií se v archeologii začaly využívat i geoinformační technologie. Pro sběr prostorových dat tvoří základ geodetické metody, dále využití historických a současných kartografických děl, mapování pomocí GPS, 3D terestrické laserové skenování a již zmíněná metoda DPZ. Pro práci s geodaty, jejich analýzy a syntézy se od 90. let minulého století využívá geografický informační systém (GIS) a publikování výsledků v prostředí internetu. Cílem bakalářské práce je za pomoci využití dat získaných z nedestruktivních archeologických metod (DPZ a geofyziky) identifikovat potencionální archeologické objekty. Dále vyhodnotit dvě různé průzkumné metody ze stejného území a provést jejich komparaci. Na základě vizuální interpretace a následné vektorizace objektů vzniklo několik grafických a tabelárních výstupů včetně webové aplikace zobrazující výsledky komparace jednotlivých metod.

Abstract:

This bachelor´s thesis deals with the use of non-destructive methods in the identification of archaeological objects. In the specific conditions of the arid desert environment of the Abusir locality, some monuments have been waiting for their discovery for thousands of years. The most commonly used methods for searching for these monuments are, in addition to classical field exploration, the Earth remote sensing method (ERS), which provides a completely different perspective on the landscape, and geophysical prospecting, which can also uncover objects hidden beneath the surface. With the development of modern technologies, geoinformation technologies have also begun to be used in archaeology. Geodetic methods form the basis for collecting spatial data, followed by the use of historical and current cartographic works, mapping using GPS, 3D terrestrial laser scanning, and the aforementioned ERS method. Since the 1990s, a geographic information system (GIS) has been used to work with geodata, their analysis and synthesis, and to publish results on the Internet. The aim of this bachelor´s thesis is to identify potential archaeological objects using data obtained from non-destructive archaeological methods (ERS and geophysics). Furthermore, to evaluate two different exploration methods in the same area and perform their comparison, based on visual interpretation and subsequent vectorization of objects, several graphic and tabular outputs were created, including a web application displaying the results of comparing individual methods.
