An Examination of the Use of Corpora and Concordances in Language Teaching and Learning and its Implications for Syllabus Design in Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Potenciál korpusů a konkordancí při výuce jazyků byl a je předmětem mnoha studií, z nichž některé dokonce docházejí k závěru, že se nacházíme na pokraji revoluce. Na druhé straně, i přes to, že korpusy a konkordance se používají při vytváření současných slovníků a učebnic gramatiky, experti se shodují v tom, že korpusy a konkordance velice málo ovlivnily výuku cizích jazyků ve školách. Dále, i přes velký počet studií dokazujících potenciál korpusů a konkordancí při výuce jazyků, jsou tyto studie převážně zaměřeny na výuku mimoškolskou či výuku na univerzitách. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl provéct studii, jak korpusy a konkordance mohou sloužit ke zlepšení výsledků studentů středních škol v České republice při jejich studiu jazyka. Zaměření diplomové práce je na tvorbu sylabů, práce se však též zabývá dopadem dané tématiky na vzdělávací politiku, vzdělávání učitelů a učitelskou praxi.

Abstract:

There have been many studies conducted demonstrating the potential for corpora and concordances in language teaching with some even predicting that we are on the verge of a revolution. However, despite the fact that the use of corpora and concordances has been instrumental in the development of modern dictionaries and grammar books, there is broad agreement that corpora and concordances have made little impact on actual English language teaching in the classroom. Although many studies have been conducted demonstrating the potential for corpora and concordances in language teaching, the studies have primarily targeted adult learners and university students. This thesis sets out to examine how corpora and concordances can be used to improve the learning outcomes of English language students at secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The thesis focuses on syllabus design but also considers the implications for educational policy, teacher training and teaching practice.
