Reflection of Depression in Jack London´s works

Abstract:

This paper deals with the question of presence of depression in Jack London´s life and his works. It concentrates on the semi-autobiographical work called Martin Eden and autobiographical work called John Barleycorn. These books served for the analysis of depressive feelings and depressing events occurring in author´s life. After reading carefully these books which reflect different periods of London´s life, and after studying the biographic works about him, it is obvious that he suffered from depression during his life and the illness influenced his writings.

Tato práce se zabývá otázkou existence deprese v životě Jacka Londona. Čerpá z autobiografických děl Martin Eden a Démon Alkohol. Knihy posloužily k analýze přítomnosti depresivních pocitů a deprimujících událostí v autorově životě. Po pozorném přečtení těchto knih, které odrážejí rozdílná období v životě Londona, a po studiu životopisných děl o něm, je zřejmé, že London trpěl depresí, která ovlivnila jeho díla.
