Gold and its role in monetary history

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané bakalářské práce je analýza role a využití zlata v měnové oblasti a jako investičního instrumentu pro centrální banky, firmy a domácnosti v současnosti. Autor popisuje vývoj a zkoumá postavení zlata napříč měnovou historií. Při analýze zlata jako investičního instrumentu autor popisuje jednotlivé dostupné formy investice do této komodity a shrnuje jejich výhody a nevýhody. Dále také argumentuje dlouhodobým převisem celosvětové poptávky nad nabídkou po zlatě a na historických příkladech dokazuje, že zlato slouží jako bezpečné aktivum v dobách nejistot a krize. Práce obsahuje taktéž problematiku rizikovosti zlatých rezerv centrálních bank. Pro analýzu rizikovosti bylo použito porovnání směrodatných odchylek výkyvů ročních a denních ukazatelů tržních cen zlata na Londýnském trhu zlata a hodnot U. S. dolar indexu, který je všeobecně vnímán jako bezpečná investice. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá, že oceňování zlata v tržních cenách může způsobit problémy v účetní bilanci centrálních bank kvůli volatilitě cen zlata na trzích.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the role and use of gold in the monetary area and as an investment tool for central banks, companies and households at present. The author describes developments and examines the position of gold across monetary history. When analysing gold as an investment instrument, the author describes the various available forms of investment in this commodity and summarizes their advantages and disadvantages. The author also argues that demand for a new gold exceeds its supply in the world on long-term basis and on historic examples proves that gold serves as a safe asset in times of uncertainty and crisis. The thesis also contains the issue of the risk of central bank gold reserves. For the risk analysis, a comparison of the standard deviation fluctuations of the annual and daily gold market price indices on the London gold market and the US dollar index, generally perceived as a safe investment, was used. The results of the analysis show that valuation of gold at market prices may cause problems in the central bank's balance sheet due to the volatility of gold prices in the markets.
