The Benedictines in the Czech Lands The Sázava Monastery

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se primárně zabývá historickým vývojem benediktinského mnišství v českých zemích se zaměřením na vznik a osudy Sázavského kláštera. Stručně se také zabývá vývojem východního i západního mnišství až po vznik prvních klášterů. Podává informace o benediktinském mnišství obecně, osobě svatého Benedikta z Nursie a jím sepsané řeholi. Mapuje zakládání benediktinských klášterů v českých zemích od 10. století, přes útlum aktivit řádu v období husitských válek, rušení některých klášterů v 18. století, světové války až po obnovu řeholního života, který nastal po Sametové revoluci. V souvislosti se založením Sázavského kláštera popisuje život jeho zakladatele svatého Prokopa a osudy kláštera za jeho života. Zaznamenává situaci kláštera v době po Prokopově smrti, přes první vyhnání slovanského konventu, jeho návrat a definitivní vypuzení v 11. století. Popisuje příchod latinského konventu na Sázavu, úpadek kláštera v době husitských válek a jeho zrušení v roce 1785. Stručně se věnuje také osudům kláštera v 19. století, kdy byl majetkem světských rodin, a ve 20. století, ve kterém jeho správu převzal stát.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis primarily treats the historical development of Benedictine monasticism in the Czech lands, with focus on the formation and the fates of the Sázava monastery. It also briefly describes the development of both eastern and western monkhood up to the foundation of the first monasteries. It provides information concerning the Benedictine monasticism in general as well as about the person of the Saint Benedict from Nursia and his Rule. It maps the formation of Benedictine monasteries in the Czech lands since the 10th century, through the suppression of the activity of the Benedictines during the Hussite wars, closing down of some monasteries in the 18th century, the World Wars up to the restoration of the Czech religious life after the Velvet Revolution. In relation to the formation of the Sázava monastery, the thesis describes the life of its founder Saint Procopius and the fates of the monastery during his life. It also maps the situation of the monastery after the death of Saint Procopius, through the first exile of the Slavic convent, its return and the definitive expulsion in the 11th century. The text describes the arrival of the Latin convent to Sázava, the downturn of the monastery during the Hussite Wars and its annulment in 1785. It also briefly treats the fates of the monastery in the 19th century, when it became property of secular families, and during the 20th century, after its maintenance was taken over by the state.
