Incunabula database of Research library in Olomouc

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Databáze prvotisků Vědecké knihovny v Olomouci“ pojednává o specifické oblasti prvotisků, která se zde protíná s oblastí využití moderních technologií. Cílem práce je především navrhnout funkční a dostupnou databázi, jejíž realizace bude schopen i absolvent knihovnicko-informačního oboru. To vše za použití volně dostupného software. Dalším cílem práce je pak návrh rozšíření popisu jednotlivých prvotisků o všechny dostupné údaje a tyto pak zanést do nově vzniklé databáze. S využitím digitálních technologií doplnit databázi o fotografie tzv. klíčových stran, tedy stran důležitých pro určování jednotlivých prvotisků a postihování jejich drobných odlišností, jako jsou vady tisku, dřevořezy etc. První část práce je věnována sbírce prvotisků Vědecké knihovny v Olomouci (dále VKOL). Popisuje historii knihovny, genezi fondu. Shrnuje metodiku popisu prvotisků, stav jejich zpracování ve Vědecké knihovně v Olomouci a nejnovější objevy prvotisků ve fondu této knihovny. Další část je věnována digitálním knihovnám a databázím. Jsou připomínány existující digitální knihovny a databáze prvotisků a starých tisků. Práce pokračuje návrhem databáze prvotisků VKOL, která je řešena jako webová aplikace, což zaručuje nezávislost na systému badatele (klienta). Celý systém je naprogramován v jazyce PHP pro provoz na webovém serveru s podporou PHP (server APACHE). Pro uložení dat je v návrhu použita databáze MySQL. Toto řešení zaručuje možnost provozu webového serveru jak na platformě MS Windows, tak na platformě Linux/Unix.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis “The database of incunabula owned by the Research Library in Olomouc” aims at specific area of incunabula in connection with modern technologies. The goal of the thesis is to propose usable and accessible for free database of incunabula which would be adjustable for use by other librarians – the graduates of library-informatics branch of university study. The used software should be accessible for free. The other goal of the thesis is to extend the description of individual incunabula of as much data as possible and include them into the newly proposing database. The database should also contain photos of “key” pages – pages important for individual incunabula determination and for notification of subtle differences such as defects of press, woodcuts, etc. The thesis begins with description of incunabula owned by the Research Library in Olomouc, with history of Research Library and a genesis of historical books collection. After this the methodology of incunabula description and the latest discoveries of incunabula in Research Library are mentioned. The following chapter of the thesis focuses on the issue of digital libraries and databases and beside this on existing databases of incunabula and rare books. The thesis continues with proposal of incunabula database which is supposed to be website application with the purpose not to be dependent on the system used by researcher (client). The programming language PHP is used on website server APACHE which supports PHP. In addition to this MySQL is used for data storage. Owning to this solution of the database the possibility to be used by MS Windows and also Linux/Unix is guaranteed.
