Significance of Trivial Symbolism in James Joyce's Ulysses

Abstract:

The thesis aims to characterize the role of trivial symbolism in James Joyce?s novel, Ulysses. The first part of the thesis presents the stages of the development of Joyce?s artistic personality which culminated in the formulation of his creative principles. It concentrates on the decisive moments of Joyce?s life that largely determined his artistic perspective. Furthermore the thesis intends to give a concise description of literary devices that are employed in the novel and consider its status as a modernist work. The main objective of this thesis is to establish a reading of Ulysses that concentrates on the significance of trivial symbolism. The thesis therefore deals with the principles of Joyce?s aesthetics which underpins the importance of the symbolic aspect of triviality in Ulysses. The last part of thesis traces the occurrence of trivial symbolism in the text and provides an overall evaluation of its employment in Ulysses.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je charakterizovat úlohu triviálního symbolismu v románu Jamese Joyce, Odyseus. Úvodní část práce se zabývá rozvojem Joyceovy umělecké osobnosti, který vyvrcholil artikulací principů jeho umělecké tvorby. Tato část se zaměřuje na rozhodující momenty Joyceova života, které výrazně ovlivnily jeho tvůrčí perspektivu. Práce dále předkládá stručný přehled literárních prostředků, které jsou v románu uplatněny a posuzuje status díla v kontextu modernistické literatury. Hlavním záměrem práce je předložit interpretaci Odysea, která vyzdvihuje význam triviálního symbolismu v tomto díle. Práce se v důsledku toho zabývá principy Joyceovy estetiky, která podtrhuje symbolický aspekt triviality uplatněné v díle Odyseus. Závěrečná část práce je tedy věnována analýze výskytu triviálního symbolismu v textu Odysea a předkládá celkové hodnocení způsobu uplatnění tohoto literárního prostředku v rámci tohoto díla.
