Coping strategies in adolescents with physical disability and possibilities of their interventional impact

Abstract:

This project is tied up to the interest in problems of mental health, especially problems of young people coping with stress and of the impact on their psychical resilience, strengthening their resources. The basis of the project is evaluation of an experimental program, intended to improve resilience of young people against the negative impact of stress on their health. We are concentrating on training of prevention techniques and on an intensive development of resources in 6 areas (Caring for Yourself, Assertion and Fighting, Rational Thinking, Relationships, Stress Management, Planning and Organising), especially during the period of adolescence, specifically the physically disabled, who are still in their critical development phase. The sample consisted of two groups of physically disabled adolescents (N=23) in the age of 13 – 15 years. The experimental group included 9 physically disabled people (6 boys, 3 girls), who went through a complete intervention program, while the control group included 14 physically disabled people without intervention (9 boys, 5 girls). Another part of the project evaluated the quality of processes and specifics in coping with stress, which became the basis for assessment of specific goals and construction of methods included in the above-mentioned program. There were 265 adolescents from the group with physical disability and 336 healthy adolescents without disability or chronic diseases participating in the research of coping strategies. We have specifically targeted the questions of preferences in coping strategies, of differences between genders and age groups and the effect of type and duration of disability on its handling. We have concentrated on relations between personality factors and specific coping strategies, as well as on the effect of stressor and subjective perception of its manageability in coping behaviour in adolescents. Complex knowledge and research into coping processes requires an interactive approach. Assessing the relationship between characteristics of stress situation and personality, as well as resistance research, in the meaning of resilience, is the core of our empirical study. In people with physical disability, it also means the research of individual specifics of their development, as well as their own disability factors as a possible specific stressor. The proposed project is based on a research objective of Institute of Psychology, Academy of Sciences in the area of the psychology of health, realized with the support of a Rector's programme to support MU student's creative work - Category D (MUNI/23/D0003/2008).

Abstract:

Projekt nadväzuje na záujem o problematiku duševného zdravia, najmä o problémy zvládania záťaže u mladých ľudí a ovplyvňovanie ich psychickej odolnosti, posilňovaním zdrojov. Podstatou projektu je overovanie experimentálneho programu na zvyšovanie odolnosti voči negatívnemu dopadu stresu na zdravie v skupine dospievajúcich. Zameriavame sa na nácvik postupov v prevencii a na intenzívne rozvíjanie zdrojov v 6 oblastiach (starostlivosť o seba, asertivita, racionálne myslenie, medziľudské vzťahy, zvládanie stresu, plánovanie a organizácia), najmä v období dospievania a špecificky u telesne postihnutých, ktorí sú v kritickej vývinovej fáze. Výskumnú vzorku tvorili dve skupiny dospievajúcich s telesným postihnutím (N=23) vo veku 13 – 15 rokov. Experimentálnu skupinu tvorilo 9 ľudí s telesným postihnutím (6 chlapcov, 3 dievčatá), ktorí absolvovali kompletný intervenčný program a kontrolnú skupinu 14 ľudí s telesným postihnutím bez intervencie (9 chlapcov, 5 dievčat). Súčasťou projektu je zisťovanie kvality procesov a špecifík v zvládaní záťaže, ktoré sa stávajú východiskom pre stanovenie špecifických cieľov a konštrukciu metód spomínaného programu. Výskumu copingových stratégií sa zúčastnilo 265 dospievajúcich zo skupiny telesne postihnutých a 336 zdravých dospievajúcich bez prítomnosti telesného postihnutia alebo chronického ochorenia. Špecificky sa zaoberáme otázkou preferencií stratégií zvládania u dospievajúcich, na medzipohlavné a vekové rozdiely, vplyv druhu a doby vzniku postihnutia na zvládanie. Zameriavame sa na vzťahy medzi faktormi osobnosti a konkrétnymi stratégiami zvládania ako aj vplyv stresora a subjektívnej percepcie jeho zvládnuteľnosti na copingové správanie u dospievajúcich. Komplexné poznanie a skúmanie procesov zvládania si vyžaduje interakčný prístup. Zohľadnenie súvislostí charakteristík záťažovej situácie a osobnosti i štúdium odolnosti v zmysle resiliencie je ťažiskom empirického výskumu. U ľudí s postihnutím znamená aj skúmanie osobitosti ich vývinu a faktoru postihnutia samého ako možného špecifického stresora. Predkladaný projekt vychádza z výskumného zámeru Psychologického ústavu AV ČR v oblasti psychológie zdravia, realizovaný s podporou Programu rektora Masarykovej Univerzity v kategórii D: vynikající disertační práce v oborech humanitních a společenských věd (MUNI/23/D0003/2008).
