The effect of valence and arousal of emotions on object- space- and feature-based visual attention

Abstract:

Značné množství studií již dokázalo sílu emocí ovlivňovat naši zrakovou pozornost. Přesto však doposud jen velmi málo z nich zaměřilo svou pozornost současně na dvě významné dimenze emocí, valenci i arousal. Stejně tak žádná ze studií nebere na zřetel jednotlivé procesy stojící za obecným pojetím zrakové pozornosti. V naší studii jsme se tedy pokusili prozkoumat blíže vztah mezi emocemi a zrakovou pozorností. Výsledky našeho experimentu potvrzují, že existují rozličné pozornostní mechanismy, které za daných podmínek usnadňují percepci podnětu. Ani pro jeden z pozornostních mechanismů ovšem nebyl pozorován signifikantní vliv emocí. Pozorován byl pouze vliv interakce valence a arousalu pro souhrnně všechny typy pozornosti, kdy negativní emoce vysokého arousalu vedly oproti pozitivním emocím vysokého arousalu k nižším reakčním časům. Tyto výsledky jsou interpretovány v diskusi.

Abstract:

A great number of studies has already shown the power of emotions to influence our visual attention. Yet until now only few of those studies focused their attention concurrently on two significant dimensions of emotions, valence and arousal. Also none of those studies takes to account each process that stands behind a general conception of visual attention. In our study we have tried to explore the relationship between emotions and visual attention more closely. The results of our experiment confirm that there are different attentional mechanisms that, under certain conditions, facilitate a perception of stimulus. Though there was no siginificant effect of emotions on any of those attentional mechanisms, there was significant observation in interaction between valence and arousal for all types of attention at once, when negative emotions of high arousal led (in comparison with positive emotions of high arousal) to lower reaction times. Those results are interpreted in discussion.
