Pain perception: Personality and situational factors

Abstract:

Studie zjišťovala vztah proměnných ruminace a sebekontrola s intenzitou bolestivosti a ne-příjemnosti podnětů. Podněty byla plotna o 45°C a plotna, na níž vznikala takzvaná Thermal grill illusion (TGI). Jedná se o fenomén, při kterém kombinace dvou nebolestivých teplot (17°C a 40°C) dává vzniknout vjemu paradoxní bolesti. Také došlo k experimentální manipu-laci s mírou očekávané bolestivosti na vzorku 42 lidí. Práce prokázala vztah ruminace k nepříjemnosti podnětů a vztah očekávání k nepříjemnosti a bolestivosti podnětů. Zároveň klasifikovala 31 (73%) lidí jako náchylné k TGI a ukázala, že se od ostatních liší v míře rumi-nace a očekávání bolesti. V diskuzi se autor věnuje otázkám spojeným s výzkumem TGI, mimo jiné také problémům se standardizací zařízení a s validitou hodnocení vjemů.

Abstract:

The present study focused on the relationship between rumination, self-control and percep-tions of pain intensity and pain unpleasantness. The used stimuli were 45°C and the so-called Thermal grill illusion (TGI). This is a paradoxical feeling of pain that occurs when two otherwise innocuous temperatures (17°C a 40°C) interlace. Furthermore, an experimental manipulation with pain expectancy was performed on a sample of 42 people. The study proved the existence of a relationship between rumination and pain unpleasantness and a relationship between pain expectancy and pain intensity, unpleasantness. At the same time, 31 people (73%) were classified as responders to the TGI and they were shown to have scored higher on rumination and pain expectancy. In the discussion, the author focused on questions concerning the TGI research, such as the lack of standardization of TGI apparatus-es and the lack of validity in TGI pain measures.
