Obscenity and beauty in the work of Émile Zola

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá pojmy „obscénnosti“ a „krásy“ v díle hlavního představitele francouzského naturalismu Émila Zoly. V první, teoretické, části si představíme naturalismus, přiblížíme vývoj tohoto směru ve Francii, zaměříme se na jednotlivé problematické jevy, které naturalismus přináší. Dále se zaměříme na ohlasy v českých zemích, přiblížíme si tvorbu Émila Zoly a zaměříme se i na jeho přátelství s malířem Paulem Cézannem. Ve druhé, praktické, části vymezíme pojmy „obscénnosti“ a „krásy“ tak, jak jsou obecně chápány. Poté aplikujeme tyto pojmy na konkrétní Zolovy romány – Nana a Břicho Paříže. V závěru práce ověříme estetickou hodnotu obou románů. Zjistíme, zda by s pomocí alterací, tedy určitých změn v dílech, stoupla nebo naopak klesla estetická hodnota těchto textů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with concepts of „obscenity“ and „beauty“ in the work of the the leader of the French naturalism Émile Zola. In the first, theoretical part, we introduce naturalism and explain a development of this movement in France, focusing on individual problematic appearances that naturalism brings. Further, we focus on some responses to such naturalism in Czech language milieu. We describe Zola´s literary output and also his friendship with Paul Cézanne. In the second, practical part, we define concepts of „obscenity“ and „beauty“ as they are commonly understood. Then we apply these concepts to specific Zola´s novels – Nana and Belly of Paris. Finally, we try to verify an aesthetic value (inspired by Kulka´s theory) of both novels by introducing some possible textual changes and subsequently exploring an influence such changes on a value of the texts.
