South Korea: Economic Relations with the United States

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce "Korejská republika: Ekonomická spolupráce s USA" je shrnout spolupráci Korejské republiky s jejím tradičním ekonomickým, vojenským a politickým spojencem - Spojenými státy americkými. Pro tento účel je nejprve nastíněn vliv Spojených států na politický vývoj v zemi a na ekonomický vzestup Korejské republiky. Hlavní část práce je zaměřena na obchodní výměnu a obecně na ekonomické vztahy států, zejména na jejich vývoj v posledním desetiletí a problémy, které v alianci vzešly z ekonomického růstu Korejské republiky. Diskutovány jsou především okolnosti, za nichž vznikla dohoda o volném obchodu mezi státy, očekávané důsledky této dohody a reálný dopad na alianci. V poslední části diplomové práce je spolupráce Korejské republiky s USA posouzena v kontextu velmi aktuální otázky KLDR a denuklearizace poloostrova, stejně jako z pohledu zemí, které mají tradičně svůj vliv na Korejském poloostrově -- Číny a Japonska.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is to sum up economic relations between the Republic of Korea and the United States of America, its traditional economic, military and political ally. For this purpose the thesis first introduces the influence of the US on the political development and economic rise of South Korea. The main part of the thesis is devoted to recent economic relations of the two countries, especially to the main trade disputes, which occured after the outstanding economic growth of South Korea. The thesis then discusses these problems as the circumstances that led to the KORUS-FTA - a free trade agreement between South Korea and the US, as well as expected results of the agreement and a real impact of the agreement. The last chapter analyzes the US-South Korea alliance in relation to the whole issue of North Korea and the nuclear threat is poses, as well as in regard of the rise of China.
