Antiquity in the opera

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl zmapovat oblast operní tvorby inspirované kulturou antického období Řecka a Říma, včetně nastínění historického vývoje obou antických kultur a jejich vlivu na pozdější umělecké směry. V první části této diplomové práce je zkoumán jak antický mýtus, tak i antické drama, se svými předními autory, jako samostatný útvar. Následně se poukazuje na jejich vývoj a jejich využití v operních dílech. V druhé části této diplomové práce je soustředění zaměřeno na vybrané opery a jejich tvůrce, kteří si jako námět pro svou operu vybrali právě antický motiv. Obsah těchto kapitol se dotýká samotného popisu děje zmíněných oper, i podrobnějšího rozboru děje v hudebním kontextu s výčtem zásadních operních scén. V rámci toho je čtenář seznámen i s nejvýznamnějšími interprety hlavních úloh daných oper a taktéž je poukázáno na výrazná umělecká pojetí především zvukového a obrazového záznamu.

Abstract:

This work aims to map the area of opera creation inspired by the culture of ancient Greece and Rome, including an outline of the historical development of both ancient cultures and their influence on later artistic trends. In the first part of this thesis, both ancient myth and ancient drama, with their leading authors, are examined as a separate entity. Subsequently, their development and their use in opera works is pointed out. In the second part of this thesis, the concentration is focused on selected operas and their creators, who chose an antique motif as the subject for their opera. The content of these chapters touches on the very description of the plot of the mentioned operas, as well as a more detailed analysis of the plot in a musical context with a list of essential opera scenes. As part of this, the reader is also introduced to the most important interpreters of the main roles of the given operas, and it is also pointed out to significant artistic concepts, especially of sound and visual recording.
