Art as a Product of Natural and Sexual Selection

Abstract:

Nejobecnějším cílem této práce je seznámit českého čtenáře s tzv. evoluční (neboli darwinistickou) estetikou, čehož se snaží dosáhnout prostřednictvím představení nejrůznějších řešení základní otázky, kterou si evoluční estetika klade – otázky po původu umění. Práce se pokouší ukázat, že pojetí umění jako čistě kulturního produktu si nedovede poradit s několika charakteristikami umění, které naopak nedělají problém přístupu evolučnímu. Dále předkládá přehled základních teorií vysvětlujících původ umění právě z evolučního hlediska. Tyto teorie jsou rozčleněny do dvou skupin podle toho, zda umění považují za adaptaci nebo vedlejší produkt. Přičemž adaptivní teorie jsou dále děleny na základě toho, zda umění vysvětlují prostřednictvím přirozeného nebo pohlavní výběru – tj., zda podle nich umění poskytuje výhodu pro přežití nebo pro reprodukci.

Abstract:

The general aim of this thesis is to introduce the so-called evolutionary (or darwinist) aesthetics to the Czech reader. It tries to achieve this through presentation of various approaches to the issue that is fundamental for evolutionary aesthetics – question of the origin of art. Thesis attempts to show that approach which treats the art as a mere cultural product can not cope with several characteristics of art. However, these characteristics are easy target for evolutionary approach. It then presents an overview of basic theories which seek to explain origin of art from evolutionary point of view. These theories are divided into two groups according to whether they see art as an adaptation or a by-product. Furthermore, the adaptive theories are split again into two groups depending on whether they explain art by means of natural or sexual selection – i.e. whether art provides a benefit for survival or reproduction.
