The individual and intercultural differences in perception and cognition

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá individuálními a interkulturními rozdíly ve vnímání a myšlení. V teoretické části je představena obsáhlá rešerše dosavadních poznatků týkajících se percepce a kognice, kognitivního stylu, individualismu a kolektivismu a interkulturního výzkumu. V praktické části je představen interkulturní výzkum, kterého se zúčastnilo celkem 98 osob ze dvou kulturních celků. Západní kulturu reprezentují Češi (N = 53), východní kulturu reprezentují Číňané (N = 22) a Taiwanci (N = 23). Výsledky naznačují, že západní participanti jsou méně kolektivističtí, užívají spíše holistický kognitivní styl a v mapě kategorizují více podle analytických pravidel oproti východním participantům. Nebyly nalezeny rozdíly v míře individualismu, stejně jako nebyly nalezeny rozdíly mezi Číňany a Taiwanci. Z výsledků vyplývá, že kultura opravdu ovlivňuje lidské vnímání a myšlení. Dále nebyly nalezeny také žádné relevantní individuální rozdíly. V práci je testován také celý výzkumný model pomocí path analysis, ze které vyplývá, že individualismus a kolektivismus mírně predikují analytický/holistický kognitivní styl, a že kognitivní styl velmi dobře predikuje analytickou/holistickou kategorizaci v mapě.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the individual and the cross-cultural differences in a perception and a cognition. There is an extensive literature research about a perception and a cognition, a cognitive style, an individualism and collectivism and cross-cultural research in the theoretical part of the thesis. The diploma thesis also includes cross-cultural research on 98 participants from two different cultures. The Western culture is composed of the Czechs (N = 53), whereas the Eastern culture is composed of the Chinese (N = 22) and the Taiwanese (N = 23). The findings suggest that the west participants are less collectivistic, use more holistic cognitive style and their categorization in a map is more analytic compared to the east participants. The research did not show any significant differences between the Chinese and the Taiwanese. These findings indicate that the culture truly influences human cognition and perception. The whole research model was also verified in this thesis. The path analysis suggests that individualism and collectivism slightly predict the analytic/holistic cognitive style. The path analysis also shows that cognitive style considerably predicts a categorization in a map.
