Realism and decadence: About prosaic attempts of Otakar Theer

Abstract:

Úkolem předložené diplomové práce je zpracování celkové prozaické tvorby českého básníka, prozaika, kritika a dramatika Otakara Theer, který žil a tvořil na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Theer se prosadil v literárních kruzích především jako básník, je autorem čtyř básnických sbírek, a jako autor dramatu Faëthon. Avšak jeho prozaická tvorba zůstala až do dneška téměř nepovšimnuta. Následující práce se proto snaží zmapovat méně známou část Theerovy tvorby. Hlavní cíl této práce je tedy komletní prostudování a rozbor Theerových próz se zřetelem na realistické a dekadentní prvky; určení jejich místa v Theerově literární tvorbě a jejich zařazení do dobového literárního kontextu a zpracování soudobých kritických ohlasů. Hlavním znakem většiny Theerových próz je jeho subjektivistický přístup. Snažil se překonat tento subjektivismus návratem k realistickým prvkům. Nejvlastnějším Theerovým tématem byl životní a erotický pesimismus, který souvisel s jeho životní zkušeností a měl původ v jeho osamělosti. Otakaru Theerovi se na poli prózy nepodařilo příliš uspět, vždy zůstal a pravděpodobně i v budoucnu zůstane ve stínu své lyrické tvorby. Theerovo prozaické intermezzo nijak výrazně nepoznamenalo a neinspirovalo tehdejší literární produkci, on sám si uvědomoval nedostatek svých tvůrčích schopností, a tak nakonec upustil od psaní dalších próz a vrátil se zpět k lyrické tvorbě.

Abstract:

The task of this submitted thesis is the elaboration of whole prosaic writings of Czech poet, prosaist, critic and dramatist Otakar Theer, who lived and wrote at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century. Theer succeeded in literature mainly as a lyric poet ? he is the author of four lyric garners ? and as an author of the drama Faëthon. However, his prosaic production has gone almost unnoticed until nowadays. That is the purpose of the following work, which tries to chart this part of Theer?s writings, rather unknown. The main aim of this work is the complete study and analysis of Theer?s proses in reference to realistic and decadent elements; a definition of place, which fill the proses in Theer?s production and an inclusion of them in literary contemporary context and an elaboration of contemporary critical reactions. The fundamental mark of the most of Theer?s proses is his subjective approach. He tried to surmount this subjectivism by the return to realistic elements. The most frequent theme of his prosaic creation was life and erotic pessimism, which was connected with his own experience and originated from his solitude. Otakar Theer was not very succesfull in his prosaic attempts, he always stood and probably will also stand in the shade of his lyric writings. Theer?s prosaic intermezzo nor affected, neither inspired too much the contemporary literary production. He was aware of the lack of his creative abilities and that is why he finally decided to leave to write stories and he returned to lyric creation.
