Bilingualism and development of vocabulary in the preschool age: a case study.

Abstract:

The bachelor theses “Bilingualism and the development of the lexicon in preschool children: a case study” deals with the problems of bilingualism in the context of language acquisition, especially with problems of the development of the lexicon. The main question under consideration is, if there is a negative impact of a child’s bilingualism on the size of his or her vocabulary in preschool age. In the first part of the thesis, relevant facts discussed in the literature on bilingual acquisition are presented, preparing the theoretical ground for an empirical study presented in the main part of the thesis. The empirical study was conducted with several preschool-age children, one of them growing up bilingual, two of them monolingual. The tests used in this study were taken from the pedagogical literature and are widely used in the Czech Republic to assess children’s school readiness. They are specially designed to assess the development of the child’s vocabulary in Czech. In the last chapter, the test results are evaluated and confronted with claims made in the literature.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Dvojjazyčnost a vývoj slovní zásoby v předškolním věku: případová studie“ („Zweisprachigkeit und Wortschatzentwicklung im Vorschulalter: eine Fallstudie“) se zabývá problematikou bilingvismu na pozadí vývoje lidské řeči, speciálně vývoje slovní zásoby. Tato práce si především klade otázku, zda dvojjazyčnost v předškolním věku může negativně ovlivnit rozsah slovní zásoby jednoho z praktikovaných jazyků. Poznatky z odborné literatury tvoří teoretický základ pro následný výzkum, který je hlavním pilířem práce a spočívá v testování dětí předškolního věku, z nich jedno vyrůstá bilinguálně a dvě vyrůstají jednojazyčně. Testy vychází z odborné literatury a užívají se běžně pro určení školní zralosti při zápisu do 1. tříd, mimo jiné jsou speciálně konstruovány pro zjištění dosažené úrovně slovní zásoby českého jazyka. Závěrem této práce je zhodnocení jednotlivých výsledků testů s následnou konzultací poznatků z odborné literatury.
