Comparative analysis of labor mobility in the European Union and the United States of America

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je pomocí gravitačního modelu migrace zodpovědět výzkumnou otázku, a to kvantifikovat reakci migračních toků na změny základních makroekonomických identit určujících intenzitu migrace v prostoru Evropské unie a Spojených států amerických. Hypotéza předpokládající vyšší sílu migračních proudů v USA byla potvrzena, přičemž bylo kvantifikováno, že úroveň migrace v EU je v rámci porovnatelných států na úrovni 20,8 % USA. Výsledky regresní analýzy dále zodpověděly klíčovou výzkumnou otázku, a to jakým způsobem se liší vlivy klíčových determinantů migrace v rámci těchto dvou prostorů. Bylo zjištěno, že migrační toky v EU jsou významně citlivější v reakci na makroekonomické faktory, jako je rozdíl v HDP na obyvatele vyjádřeném v paritě kupní síly nebo v měrách nezaměstnanosti mezi zemí původu a cílovou destinací. Datový soubor sledoval bilaterální migrační proudy v období let 2007 až 2017, přičemž dle mých dostupných informací se jedná o první analytickou práci, jež komparuje ve shodném čase a při využití totožné specifikace gravitačního modelu migrace sledované prostory. Tímto způsobem byla umožněna přímá porovnatelnost odhadnutých parametrů.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to answer the research question regarding the quantification of migration flows responses to changes in basic macroeconomic identities, which determine the intensity of migration in the European Union and the United States of America using the gravity model of migration. The hypothesis assuming higher power of migration flows in the USA was confirmed. It was quantified that the level of migration in the EU is 20.8 % compared to the level of migration in the USA. The outcomes of regression analysis further answered the key research question in which ways the influences of key determinants of migration differ in these two areas. It was discovered that migratory flows in the EU are more sensitive in their reaction to macroeconomic factors, such as differences in GDP per capita in purchasing power parity and the unemployment rate in the country of origin and target destination. The dataset followed the bilateral migration flows in the period between years 2007 and 2017. According to available sources, this is the first analytical study that compares these two areas within the same time span utilizing the same specification of the gravity model of migration. This approach has facilitated a direct comparison of the estimated parameters.
