Concertmasters of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je získat a zprostředkovat čtenářům cenné informace o koncertních mistrech Chicago Symphony Orchestra, včetně aspektů, které jejich pozice v jednom z prvotřídních světových orchestrů obnáší. Práce se také věnuje přístupům a postojům bývalých velkých umělců, koncertních mistrů a dirigentů, díky nimž se Chicago Symphony Orchestra dostal na dnešní vysokou úroveň. Postupně je představeno šestnáct koncertních mistrů, kteří se v čele orchestru vystřídali od jeho založení v roce 1891. Teze čerpá převážně z publikace "America's Concertmasters" od A. M. Heiles, která zpracovala pramenné materiály z archivu Chicago Symphony Orchestra Rosenthal Archives a autentické informace z osobních rozhovorů se šesti koncertními mistry. Snažila se například zjistit, jak se houslisté na pozici koncertního mistra dostali, jaké na ně byly kladeny požadavky, s jakými známými osobnostmi spolupracovali či jaké jsou jejich pohledy na umění a orchestr.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to obtain valuable information concerning the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and fundamentals the position of concert master in one of the world's leading orchestras entails. Several anecdotes discuss former approaches and attitudes of great artists, concert masters and conductors, who had built the orchestra up to the level it stands at today. Each of the sixteen cocncertmasters that have lead the orchestra is introduced individually from the founding of the orchestra in 1891 to the present. The thesis primarily draws from the publication by A. M. Heiles "America ?s concertmasters", which contains information A. M. Heiles processed from sourced materials in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Rosenthal Archive and authentic information from her personal interviews with six of the concertmasters. The author carefully formed a set of questions for the interviews. For instance, she inquired how the violinists acquired the concertmaster position, which requirements they were oblicated to fulfill, their collaboration with other renowned musicians, and their perspectives on musicianship and the orchestra.
