Poetics of corporeal mime by Etienne Decroux

Abstract:

V této disertační práci se věnuji specifickému pojetí tělesného mimu Etienna Decrouxe a odpovídám na následující otázky: Jak se umění mimu rodí z první reformy divadla? Jak toto umění mimu dosáhlo své autonomie jako umělecké disciplíny? Jak Decroux obhájí specifičnost tohoto umění v konfrontaci s tancem 20. století? Domnívám se, že Decroux se nejprve zabýval významem pohybu těla v rámci divadla, ale postupně objevoval komplexní a bohatý umělecký svět, jakési „skryté divadlo“, které bych rád nazýval „scéna těla“. Decroux se posléze se rozhodl sestavit autonomní umění, „umění mimu“, kterým rozuměl „čisté umění pohybu na scéně“. Ve své práci srovnávám umění mimu těla s jinými pohybovými formami 20. století, hlavně s „uměním pohybu na scéně“ Rudolfa Labana („Art of mouvement on the stage“). Díky četným analýzám praktických i teoretických pracích věnovaným pojmům pohybu lidského těla (zejména Labanovy, Decrouxovy práce a práce Jacques Lecoqa) popsišu základní principy současného umění pohybu praktikovaného herci, kterých se poetika těla na scéně týká především. Definice pojmu „poetika“ si vypůjčuji u francouzské teoretičky současného tance, Laurence Louppeová, která poetiku definuje jako „studium způsobů, jak podpořit emocionální reakci na systém významu nebo výrazu.“ Vůdčí otázkou mé práce je: v čem je umění tělesného mimu pro nás stále inspirující i v 21. století? Opírám se prvotně o svoje zkušenosti tanečníka, choreografa a pedagoga. Čerpám z literárních zdrojů a z archivních filmů.

Abstract:

In this dissertation I expose the specificity of the Etienne Decroux's art of mime, and attempt to answer following questions: How mime art arises from the first theatrical Reform? How does this scenic mime get its artistic autonomy? How does Decroux preserve the specifics of his mime confronted with twentieth-century dance? I point out that Decroux first dealt with the culture of theatrical training, then, gradually discovered a rich and complex artistic universe, a kind of „hided theatre“, which I like to call the „body stage“. At least Decroux decided to create an autonomous art, „the dramatic corporeal mime“, he understood as art of pure „dynamo-rhythmical“ movement for the stage. I compare the corporeal mime with others twentieth-century movement arts, especially Rudolf Laban's „art of movement on the stage“. Thanks to several analyses of both practical and theoretical works about the meaning of the human body’s movement (essentially Laban and Decroux’s practice and theories, but also those of Jacques Lecoq) I aim to describe the founding principles of the contemporary art of movement practiced by actors, who are today particularly concerned with the poetics of the body on stage. The definition of poetics comes from the French theorist of contemporary dance, Laurence Louppe, who defines poetics as „the study of means to promote an emotional response to a system of meaning or expression“ My question, which prevails in this diploma thesis, was and remains: how does the corporeal mime still inspire and influence us today? I rely primarily on my experience as a performer, dancer, choreographer and teacher, and compare analyses and theories coming from both theatrical and dance practices. I am certainly influenced by my philosophical background, but not to the extent that I may become disconnected of my experience as a mover, actor and performer.
