Processes of subtitling. An analysis using the example of series Ku'damm 56

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the subject of audiovisual translation in the form of subtitles. The thesis concentrates on the creation of subtitles as well as their language and translation analysis aiming to define the subtitle text and to provide insight into its translation practice. The material used for the analysis in this thesis was the first episode of a German series called Ku’damm 56. The subtitles were created for the purpose of this thesis as a part of the practical part. The theoretical part of this thesis introduces the practice of audiovisual translation and subti-tling and offers a definition of their defining features, whilst identifying their specifics. More-over, it discusses their translation processes, challenges and strategies. The practical part introduces the method applied with the analysis and the subtitle material used, on which the language and translation analysis was carried out. The analysis confirms the original hypothesis which presumed, that the subtitle text contains elements of both spoken and written language. The translation approach of subtitling aims to achieve a faithful translation of the original audiovisual text comprehensible for its viewers. The translation strategies used in this thesis correspond with this approach. Furthermore, an additional Czech subtitling guideline was created as a part of this thesis, contributing to the Czech subtitling community, as none were available on the internet.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou spadající do oblasti audiovizuálního překla-du, konkrétně titulků. Práce se věnuje jak tvorbě titulků, tak jejich jazykové a překladatelské analýze. Za cíl si klade definovat titulkový text a poskytnout vhled do jejich překladatelské praxe. Jako příkladový materiál byl pro práci zvolen první díl německého seriálu Ku’damm 56. Titulky k tomuto dílu byly vytvořeny přímo pro účely této práce. Teoretická část práce poskytuje jak definici audiovizuálního překladu jako takového, tak de-finici titulků společně s jejich specifiky. Rozebírá také jejich překladatelské postupy, pro-blémy a strategie. Praktická část nejprve představuje zvolenou metodu a titulkový materiál, na kterém je pak provedena jazyková a překladatelská analýza. Analýza potvrdila původní předpoklad, že titulkový text obsahuje prvky mluveného i psané-ho jazyka. Jejich překladatelský přístup si klade za cíl vytvořit překlad co nejvíce věrný origi-nálu, ale zároveň srozumitelný pro recipienty, čemuž odpovídají i použité překladatelské strategie. V rámci práce byly také vytvořeny titulkovací standardy zaměřené přímo na české prostředí, které do teď nebyly na internetu dostupné.
