The possibility of scientific knowledge (Popper versus Feyerabend)

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the problems of science and the possibility of scientific knowledge at all through two important figures of philosophy of science – Karl Raimund Popper and Paul Karl Feyerabend – that at the first sight represent two opposite poles. While Popper is trying to find the criterion offering suitable differentiating sign between the science and pseudoscience, typically for Feyerabend, when studying the science he is not limited by its boundaries. The aim of the Master´s diploma thesis is to look at the possibility of scientific knowledge via above mentioned philosophers and point out the aspects in which their ideas differ as well as parts where their ideas are likewise. Through the ideas and attitudes of Popper and Feyerabend we will look at the problem of the boundaries of science through the method of falsification, scientific anarchism, the problem of induction, the theory of three worlds and stating and defining the subjective and objective in relation to the science.

Abstract:

Práca sa pozerá na problémy vedy a možnosť vedeckého poznania vôbec prostredníctvom dvoch významných postáv filozofie vedy – Karla Raimunda Poppera a Paula Karla Feyerabenda – tvoriacich na prvý pohľad dva protipóly. Kým Popper sa snaží o nájdenie kritéria poskytujúceho vyhovujúci rozlišovací znak medzi vedou a pseudovedou, pre Feyerabenda je typické, že pri skúmaní vedy sa neobmedzuje jej hranicami. Cieľom diplomovej práce je pozrieť sa na možnosť vedeckého poznania prostredníctvom týchto dvoch filozofov a zachytiť nielen tie momenty, v ktorých sa názorovo rozchádzajú, ale aj také chvíle, kedy je ich myslenie navzájom blízke. Prostredníctvom myšlienok a názorov spomínaných filozofov sa poohliadneme po probléme hraníc vedy, a to za pomoci metódy falzifikácie, vedeckého anarchizmu, problému indukcie, teórie troch svetov či postavenia a vymedzenia subjektívneho a objektívneho v súvislosti s vedou.
