Georgia: country in transition? Levitsky's and Way's concept of competitive authoritarianism applied to Saakashvili's Georgia

Abstract:

Nedokončená demokratická transformace republiky Gruzie je předmětem zkoumání. Práce se zaměřuje na období Saakašviliho prezidentsví a zkoumá toto období skrze Levitského a Waye koncept soutěživého autoritatismu, který rozvíjí popis hrozeb postsovětského budování gruzínské demokracie. Poškozování demokratického principu, rezonující mezi držiteli moci a opozicí, je zkoumámo v rámci volební, legislativní, soudní a mediální arény.

Abstract:

Incomplete democratic transformation of the republic of Georgia goes under examination. Study focuses on the period of Saakashvili’s presidency and examines this period within Levitsky’s and Way’s concept of competitive authoritarianism which contributes to overview of facts threating post-soviet Georgian democracy building. Violation of democratic principles, resonating at the playing field between incumbents and opposition, is examined within the framework of electoral, legislative, judiciary and media arena.
