Indirect Requests in Politeness Theories

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou nepřímých žádostí a jejich vnímáním ve významných zdvořilostních teoriích. Práce by měla rovněž odrážet vývoj teorií lingvistické zvvořilosti během posledních třiceti let. Aby byly výsledky relevantní, byly vybrány celkem čtyři zdvořilostní teorie, které patří k těm nejvýznamnějším. Lingvisté podepsaní pod těmito teoriemi jsou Brownová a Levinson, Geoffrey Leech, Richard Watts a Marina Terkourafi. Detailní analýza ukázala, že vnímání zdvořilosti v nepřímých žádostech se vyvíjelo v souladu s vývojem celkového vnímání projevů zdvořilosti. První dvě ze zmíněných teorií vycházejí z teorie řečových aktů a Griceova Kooperačního Principu a chápou užití nepřímosti jako prostředek, jímž dotyčný projeví při žádání větší zdvořilost. Následné dvě teorie reprezentují diskurzivní přístup a zastávají názor, že vnímání zdvořilosti závisí na kontextu situace. V tomto pojetí jsou nepřímé žádosti chápány jako zdvořilé pouze v určitých situacích. Na závěr práce je zmíněno několik případů, kdy nepřímost v žádostech není užita ze zdvořilostních důvodů, nýbrž má zcela jiný účel.

Abstract:

The thesis describes how indirect requests have been perceived in some major theories of linguistic politeness. It should also reflect the development of politeness theories over the last thirty years. For this purpose, four theories have been chosen – those written by Brown and Levinson, Geoffrey Leech, Richard Watts and Marina Terkourafi. The detailed analysis shows the perception of the indirect requests have been changing together with the development of the concept of politeness. While the first two theories are firmly based on the the speech act theory and Grice’s Cooperative Principle, seeing the indirectness as a device for increasing politeness in requests, the second two theories represent the discursive approach and claim that politeness is context-dependent. Therefore the indirect requests are perceived as polite only in certain situations. Finally, a few cases where indirectness in requests is not used for the sake of politeness are mentioned.
