Narrative Form in Doctorow's Ragtime

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá postavou vypravěče v knize Ragtime od Edgara Lawrence Doctorowa, která byla vydána v roce 1975. Od svého vydání byla kniha a její neobvyklý vypravěčský styl častým tématem nejrůznějších akademických diskuzí. Postava vypravěče nebyla nikdy jasně definována či pojmenována. Předmětem této práce je vyvrácení možnosti, že vypravěčem tohoto díla je jedna z postav, a představení argumentů, které mě vedou k přesvědčení, že vypravěč tohoto díla může být definován jako sám Příběh, abstraktní bytí, které bylo přítomno všem událostem, které je schopné číst myšlenky a pocity všech postav, zná minulost i budoucnost každého z protagonistů, ale popis, který poskytuje, je přesný, jasný, objektivní, bez emocí, bez osobních komentářů, návrhů či poznámek. V první části této práce jsou představeny a vysvětleny nejdůležitější pojmy z vypravěčství, týkající se postavy vypravěče, které budou nezbytné v praktické části této práce, pro přesný a jasný popis a definici vypravěčského stylu a postavy vypravěče tohoto díla. V druhé části práce jsou předloženy argumenty, které mě vedou k odmítnutí kterékoliv z postav jako možného vypravěče tohoto textu. Těmito argumenty jsou vypravěčův emocionální odstup a lhostejnost vůči textu a fakt, že vypravěč je vševědoucí. Dále jsou prezentovány argumenty, které mně naopak vedou k přesvědčení, že vypravěč textu může být definován jako sám Příběh. Těmito argumenty jsou vypravěčova objektivnost a neutrálnost a podoba samotného textu spolu s jazykem, který je v díle použit.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the narrative form in E. L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel Ragtime, particularly the figure of the narrator. I argue that the narrative voice of the text does not belong to the Little Boy, one of the characters who is often ascribed the role of the narrator, or any other of the characters of the text and that the third-person, omniscient, external and covert narrator can be defined as the Story itself, an anonymous, abstract being above the story world, something which has seen everything that has happened in the narrative, who knows the history and the future of every single character, who can see into the minds of all characters and read their minds, thought, desires, however, remains impartial, uninvolved, detached, refrains any comments or judgments and gives an impression of solely narrating what happened without adjusting or modifying it. It is not a third-person narrator, it is the story itself, the very essence of the narrative. In the first part of this thesis, the most important and vital terms and characteristics, necessary for a correct description of a narrative form, are introduced and explained. The second part of this thesis consists of arguments which lead me to believe that the narrator of the text is not the Little Boy or any other of the characters and why I believe the narrative voice of the novel can be defined as the Story itself. My arguments against the Little Boy, who is often believed to be the narrator of Ragtime, are the narrative voice’s emotional distance and detachment and the omniscient character of the narrator. The arguments I present in favour of the Story itself as the narrative voice are the narrator’s neutrality and impartiality and the language and form of the text.
