Transformations and Resonances of Gothic Fiction in Proses by Miloš Urban

Abstract:

Náplní této disertační práce je analýza vybraných próz Miloše Urbana v kontextu široce chápané literární kategorie tzv. gothic fiction. Jde především o romány Sedmikostelí (1999), Stín katedrály (2003), Santiniho jazyk (2005), Lord Mord (2008), Hastrman (2001), novelu Michaela (2004) a povídkovou sbírku Mrtvý holky (2007). Jádro genologicky orientovaného zkoumání tvoří analyticko-interpretační sondy, mapující ve zmíněných Urbanových dílech typické aspekty gothic fiction na úrovni klíčových motivů, postav, fikčního prostoru a intertextuálních vztahů. Disertační práce se z velké části opírá o zahraniční (převážně anglofonní a polské) odborné texty z oblasti genologie či teorie intertextuality a jejím sekundárním cílem je také zjistit, do jaké míry jsou zahraniční koncepce aplikovatelné v rámci Urbanových děl a zda lze v současné domácí či světové literatuře najít analogické příklady specifické tvůrčí poetiky postmoderní gothic fiction.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis deals with the analysis of selected works of prose by Miloš Urban within the context of widely understood literary category of so called gothic fiction. It concerns following books: novels Sedmikostelí (Seven Churches, 1999), Stín katedrály (Shadow of the Cathedral, 2003), Santiniho jazyk (Santini´s Tongue, 2005), Lord Mord (Lord Mord, 2008), Hastrman (Water Sprite, 2001), a novelette Michaela (Michaela, 2004) and a short story collection Mrtvý holky (Dead Girls, 2007). The main core of genologicaly oriented research consists of analytic-interpretive probes mapping the typical aspects of gothic fiction at a level of key motifs, characters, fictional setting and intertextual relations in the Urban´s works of fiction. The dissertation thesis is largely based on foreign (mainly Anglophone and Polish) research in the field of genology or the teory of intertextuality, and its secondary objective is also to find out to what extent are foreign concepts applicable in case of Urban's works of fiction and whether in contemporary Czech or world literature it is possible to find analogous examples of specific postmodern creative poetics of gothic fiction.
