Subjective perception of elderly health

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of our thesis was to research the subjective understanding of seniors´ health from the retirement club. We try to find out how they receive their health, which factors affect it, and this subjective evaluation compared between the Slovak and Czech seniors. Methods: The research sample consisted of 120 seniors who are members of the retirement club for the elderly, and also some members of the Third Age University of Ostrava in Ostrava. Group of respondents is made up of seniors living at home, not in the institutional care. To detect subjective perception of seniors´ health was used questionnaire finding out positive and also negative predictors of subjective health perceptions, which was created by the Canadian National Population Office for Supervision of health care. Results: Through research, we found that age, gender and education influence the subjective view of health. With age seniors evaluate their health worse, but men value their health in comparison with women better. We found that respondents with higher educational attainment understand their health better than respondents with primary education. We have shown that nationality does not affect the assessment of health, Czech and Slovak seniors assess their subjective health very similar. When we rated domains, we found that as increasing physical and mental health is also increasing positive health assessments. In the domain of social health, we conclude that social health does not affect the assessment of the seniors´ health. Conclusion: The majority of respondents in our study rated their health as satisfying that is in comparison with other studies worse outcome. Overall, we concluded that seniors rated the best domains of social and physical health. Conversely, the worst rated mental health domain. Keywords: senior; subjective assessment of health; health

Abstract:

Cieľ: Cieľom našej diplomovej práce bolo preskúmať subjektívne vnímanie zdravia u vybraných seniorov z klubu dôchodcov. Zistiť, ako subjektívne vnímajú svoje zdravie, ktoré faktory ho ovplyvňujú, a toto subjektívne hodnotenie porovnať medzi slovenskými a českými seniormi. Metodika: Výskumný súbor tvorilo120 seniorov, ktorí sú členmi klubu seniorov, a tiež, vybraní členovia Ostravskej univerzity tretieho veku v Ostrave. Skupinu respondentov tvoria seniori, ktorí žijú v domácom prostredí, a nie v ústavnej starostlivosti. K zisteniu subjektívneho vnímania zdravia seniorov bol použitý dotazník zisťujúci pozitívne a negatívne prediktori subjektívneho vnímania zdravia, ktorý vytvoril Kanadský národný populačný úrad pre Dozor nad zdravotnou starostlivosť. Výsledky: Výskumom sme zistili, že vek, pohlavie i vzdelanie vplývajú na subjektívne hodnotenie zdravia. So vzrastajúcim vekom seniori hodnotia svoj zdravotný stav horšie, muži hodnotia svoj zdravotný stav v porovnaní so ženami lepšie. Zistili sme, že respondenti s vyšším dosiahnutým vzdelaním hodnotia svoj zdravotný stav lepšie ako respondenti so základným vzdelaním. Preukázali sme, že štátna príslušnosť nevplýva na hodnotenie zdravia, českí a slovenskí seniori nehodnotia subjektívne svoje zdravie zásadne odlišne. Pri hodnotení domén sme zistili, že so vzrastajúcim fyzickým a psychickým zdravím rastie i pozitívne hodnotenie zdravotného stavu. Pri doméne sociálne zdravie sme došli k záveru, že sociálne zdravie nevplýva na hodnotenie zdravia seniorov. Záver: Väčšina respondentov z nášho výskumu ohodnotilo svoj zdravotný stav ako uspokojivý, čo je v porovnaní s inými štúdiami horší výsledok. Celkovo sme dospeli k záveru, že seniori hodnotili najlepšie doménu sociálne a fyzické zdravie. Naopak, najhoršie doménu psychické zdravie.
