The Iconography of Bacchanalia on the example of ceiling paintings in villa Portheimka

Abstract:

Diplomová práce Ikonografie Bakchanálií na příkladu nástěnné malby ve vile Portheimce je zaměřena na výtvarné zobrazení boha Bakcha a jeho mýtu na příkladu konkrétního výtvarného díla Václava Vavřince Reinera. V textu poukazuji na široké spektrum podob a významů bakchantického mýtu, které bylo využívané ke glorifikaci panovníků, šlechticů, rolníků, ale i umělců. Studie primárně vychází ze samotného vyobrazení Bakchanálií na nástropní fresce reprezentačního sálu Dientzenhoferovy vily. Barokní výjev je konfrontován s literárními prameny, které zavdaly k různorodému pojetí ikonografického tématu bakchanálii. V první části textu představuji základní schémata zobrazení boha Bakcha a jeho mýtu převládající v umění starověku, středověku a raného novověku. V druhém oddílu stati se zamýšlím nad samotným ikonografickým programem výzdoby letního sídla. Nově interpretuji bakchantickou scénu nástropní fresky reprezentačního sálu Portheimky. Na závěr srovnávám Reinerovu malbu Bakchanálii s obdobnými výtvarnými motivy v prostorách vybraných českých rezidencí v blízkosti dané fresky.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis The Iconography of Bacchanalia on the example of ceiling paintings in villa Portheimka focuses on the visual display of god Bacchus and his myth on the example of a specific work of art of Václav Vavřinec Reiner. The text refers to a wide range of forms and meanings of bacchanalian myth that was used for the glorification of monarchs, nobles, peasants, and also artists. The study is primarily based on the actual representation of the Bacchanalia at the ceiling fresco of the Dientzenhofer villa representational hall. The baroque scene is confronted with literary sources, which arose out to a diverse concept of the iconographic theme of Bacchanalia. In the first part of the text I introduce the basic schemes of the god Bacchus and his myth prevalent in the art of ancient, medieval and early modern period. In the second section of the paper I consider the actual iconographic program of decoration of the summer residence. Newly I interpret the bacchanalian scene of the Portheimka ceiling fresco. In conclusion I compare the Reiner's Bacchanalia painting with similar visual motives in the premises of selected Czech residences in the vicinity of the fresco.
