Comparing the Degree of Authorial Presence in Academic Discourse: Students vs. Academics

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá způsoby vyjádření přítomnosti autora v akademických textech studentů a akademiků v oblasti medicíny, a porovnává pět anglicky mluvících diskurzních komunit. Přítomnost autora v textu je zkoumána pomocí využití osobních zájmen, které tvoří typologii skládající se z osmi kategorií. Tato typologie vychází z prací Tang and John (1999), Flottum, Dahl, and Kinn (2006) a Starfield and Ravelli (2006). Primárním cílem práce je analýza identit magisterských studentů v jimi psaných diplomových pracích a následné srovnání se způsobem, jakým se projevují ve svých pracích akademici ze stejných univerzit. Diplomová práce si dále klade za cíl zodpovědět otázku, zda existuje rozdíl ve způsobu manifestace přítomnosti autora v textu mezi jednotlivými diskurzními komunitami.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on demonstration of the authorial presence in a corpus consisting of texts written by students and academics in the field of medicine, representing five different national discourse communities. The authorial presence was analysed through first-person pronouns, which were divided into eight different categories, based on the typologies proposed Tang and John (1999), Flottum, Dahl, and Kinn (2006) and Starfield and Ravelli (2006). The primary focus of the thesis is on the way the master's students manifest their identities in their writing and on the comparison to the academics from the same universities. Additionally, the thesis aims to answer the question of whether there is a difference between the manifestation of the authorial presence among the countries.
