Comparison of the political communication of the Czech and British prime ministers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Začátkem roku 2020 propukla pandemie COVID-19, která zásadně postihla celý svět. Vrcholní političtí představitelé v tomto období zastávali funkci těch, kteří svým občanům předávali aktuální informace o vývoji pandemie, vakcinaci a také o opatřeních v boji s touto nemocí. Tato závěrečná práce tak srovnává politickou komunikaci premiéra České republiky, Andreje Babiše, spremiérem Spojeného království, Borisem Johnsonem. U obou ministerských předsedů byly na základě teoretického rámce zkoumány jednotlivé projevy v covidovém roce 2020 a nejčastěji používaná slova v jejich projevech, což bylo následně kontrastováno hodnocením premiérů od občanů obou států. Komparací bylo zjištěno, že politická komunikace obou premiérů byla významně rozdílná. Značně se také odlišoval výčet nejčastěji užívaných slov v jejich projevech, kdy český premiér odkazoval více na finanční stránku, zatímco ten britský více na zdravotnické aspekty. Oba však v roce 2020 spojuje následný propad v jejich popularitě.

Abstract:

By the beginning of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world substantially. And hence, all the political representatives were forced to keep their citizens updated on the latest news in respect of the disease, its spread, vaccination progress, and sundry preventive measures. In accordance with the theoretical framework, therefore, this thesis compares the approaches of Andrej Babis, as the then Czech PM, and Boris Johnson as the British PM towards political communication and the frequency of words as used in 2020. The results show that they both had differed significantly in political communication as well as in the most frequent words they had used in their speeches. Whilst the Czech PM had referred to the financial side, the British one had stressed diverse healthcare aspects instead. They both, however, experienced a consequential decrease in popularity within the course of 2020.
