Nile River as a Source of Conflict in East Africa

Abstract:

Nil, jako nejdelší řeka světa a zdroj života pro jedenáct pobřežních států ve východní Africe, je již několik desetiletí zdrojem konfliktu mezi Egyptem, Etiopií a Súdánem. V 90. letech byly započaty první snahy o nastavení udržitelného a efektivního mechanismu pro rozdělení, využívání a správu nilských vod pomocí regionální organizace Iniciativa pro povodí Nilu (NBI). Situace kolem Nilu se rapidně zhoršila výstavbou Velké etiopské renesanční přehrady (GERD). Do současnosti nebylo dosaženo finálního výsledku v řešení konfliktu o vody Nilu. Vztahy Egyptu, Súdánu a Etiopie se v průběhu let opakovaně vyostřují a zhoršují. Tripartitní jednání s pomocí mezinárodních aktérů a třetích stran opakovaně selhávají. Tato bakalářská práce hodnotí konfliktní potenciál a možnosti spolupráce v povodí Nilu, analyzuje existující mechanismy, smlouvy a dohody týkající se Nilu, a vztahy hlavních aktérů. Jedná se o jednopřípadovou studii, zpracovanou pomocí analýzy odborných článků a dokumentů.

Abstract:

As the longest river in the world and the source of life for eleven coastal states in East Africa, the Nile has been a source of conflict between Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan for several decades. In the 1990s, the first efforts to set up a sustainable and effective mechanism for the allocation, use and management of Nile waters were initiated through the Nile Basin Initiative, a regional organization. The situation around the Nile rapidly worsened with the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Until now, no result has been reached in the resolution of the conflict over the waters of the Nile. Relations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have repeatedly escalated and worsened over the years. Tripartite negotiations with the help of international actors and third parties repeatedly fail. This bachelor's thesis ranks the potential for conflict and cooperation in the Nile basin, analyses the existing mechanisms, treaties and agreements related to the Nile and the relations of the main actors. This is one case study, processed using the analysis of professional articles, and documents.
