The Christmas carp - Consumer awarness of fish husbandry

Abstract:

Rybářství a chov kaprů má u nás velmi silné kořeny. Oblíbeným symbolem Vánoc se stal již před více než dvěma sty lety právě kapr, který v českých domácnostech bývá tradičním štědrovečerním pokrmem. V první části práce jsem se zabývala nejen tradicí vánočního kapra, ale především jeho chovem a etickými aspekty s chovem ryb a s vánočním kaprem spojenými. Pro určení životní pohody ryb je zásadní předpoklad, že ryby jsou schopny vnímat bolest a utrpení. Studie, které byly doposud na toto téma uskutečněny, tento předpoklad potvrzují. Druhá část práce je založena na výzkumu mezi prodejci vánočního kapra a jejich zákazníky na Jindřichohradecku. Zkoumání jsem zaměřila na jejich povědomí o chovu vánočního kapra a na nazírání na etické aspekty spojené s vánočním kaprem. Z výsledků zjištění vyplynulo, že tradice vánočního kapra je u nás stále oblíbená, ale stále častěji se na štědrovečerním stole objevují jiné pokrmy než tradiční kapr. Ohledně chovu kaprů mají prodejci přehled, neboť se ve většině případů jedná zároveň o chovatele. Zákazníci mají také ve většině případů o chovu kaprů znalosti, především proto, že pocházejí z rybníkářského regionu. Na etické aspekty nahlížejí prodejci i zákazníci ve dvou rozdílných rovinách, kdy většina považuje ryby za živočichy bolest i utrpení vnímající.

Abstract:

There are very strong roots in fishing and carp breeding in our country. A carp has been a favourite symbol of Christmas for more than two hundred years and has become a traditional Christmas Eve dish in the Czech households. In the first part I dealt not only with the traditional Christmas carp, but primarily with its breeding and the ethical aspects associated with the fish breeding and a Christmas carp. The essential assumption to determine the welfare of the fish is that they are able to perceive pain and suffering. Studies that have been conducted on this topic has confirmed it. The second part is based on a research among Christmas carp sellers and their customers in Jindřichův Hradec. I focused on the exploration of their awareness of the Christmas carp breeding and their viewing of the ethical aspects associated with the Christmas carp. The results of the findings have shown that the tradition of a Christmas carp is still popular in our country, however you can increasingly see different dishes on the Christmas Eve table than the traditional carp. Concerning the breeding of a carp the sellers have a good grasp of it because in most cases they are also the breeders. In most cases the customers also have a carp breeding knowledge, especially because they come from a fish farming region. The sellers and customers view the ethical aspects in two different levels in which most of them consider the fish to be an animal which feels pain and suffering.
