The determinants of income inequality

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá identifikací determinantů velikosti příjmové nerovnosti. Ke splnění tohoto cíle je proveden výběr vhodného ukazatele a databáze. Vzhledem k dostupnosti a úplnosti dat je vybrána mezinárodní databáze SWIID, která zahrnuje dva typy ukazatele příjmové nerovnosti – tržní a disponibilní Gini koeficient. Determinanty, které jsou v práci použity, spadají do kategorie ekonomického rozvoje, demografických, makroekonomických a politických faktorů. Data jsou zpracovaná vícerozměrnou regresní analýzou za použití panelových dat, ve které je zkoumán vliv determinantů na nerovnost příjmů. Údaje se vztahují k vybraným zemím Evropské unie, za období 2004–2016. Výsledné modely prokázaly, že největší vliv na tržní i čistou nerovnost má vysoký podíl dětí, osob v důchodovém věku a nezaměstnanost. Naopak na její snížení působí pozitivně ve-likost vládních výdajů na vzdělání, urbanizace a míra participace na trhu práce. Disponibilní ukazatel je navíc zvyšován vysokým podílem pracujících obyvatel a inflací. Na pokles se dále podílí velikost výdajů na výzkum a vývoj.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the identification of determinants of income inequality. The selection of a suitable indicator and database is demonstrated. In re-lation to the availability and completeness of data, an international SWIID database is selected, which includes two types of income inequality indicators - market and disposable Gini coefficients. The determinants that are performed in this thesis include the category of economic development, demographic, macroeconomic and political factors. The data are processed by a multi-range regression analysis using panel data, which are examined by the influence of determinants on income inequality. The data refer to selected countries of the European Union, for the period 2004–2016. The resulting models have shown that the high number of children, people of retirement age and unemployment has the greatest impact on market and disposable inequality. In contrast, a positive effect on inequality have government spending on education, urbanization and labor market participation. In addition, the disposable indicator is increased by the high number of the working population and inflation. The size of expenditure on research and development contributes to the decline.
