Interwar Photography in Brno: Cross-roads in the Cultural Spectrum of the City

Abstract:

Brněnská fotografie meziválečného období představuje důležitý zdroj často překvapujících informací o sociálních jevech doby, technických vynálezech i postupné transformaci města. V neposlední řadě je také nositelkou nového nazírání na meziválečnou proměnu estetických a uměleckých tendencí. Podobně jako filmové médium, také statický fotografický obraz vybízí ke zkoumání modernity města. Přesah významu a funkce vizuální komunikace skrze fotografii je obrovský a zásadně mění zavedené vnímání fotografického média v uměleckém kontextu. Je proto nutné respektovat a vnímat komunikativní povahu fotografie ve vztahu k dalším oborům a médiím a zabývat se fungováním vzájemných vztahů fotografického obrazu k širokému spektru společenskovědních disciplín. Předložená práce je rozčleněna na dvě základní části. V první části nastíním spektrum a vývoj brněnské fotografické scény v meziváleném období v širších sociálně kulturních souvislostech vymezených rámcem města. Věnovat se budu jednotlivým fotografickým skupinám na základě jejich charakterizace a uvedení do dobového, společenského, případně umleckého kontextu. Druhá část představí vazby a vztahy fotografického obrazu k ostatním sférám lidské činnosti. Zabývat se budu povahou fotografického média ve sféře vědecké, sledovat budu propojení s architekturou, filmem, žurnalismem a reklamou v progresivním kosmopolitním prostředí Brna.

Abstract:

Photography as a cross-road in the cultural spectre of the city from the viewpoint of both media and technology is related with penetration to various areas without intentionally directed nature of genres or styles. Viewed in context with the phenomena of new mass media, industrialization, leisure time and general cultural and sociological relations in the spatio-temporal compression of modernity, photography plays a major role in forming modern culture in the 1920's and 1930's, in the "golden era of photography". In my bachelor's diploma work I have dealt with the nature of inter-war photography in Brno within the frame of the project Brno and history of film before 1939. I have focused to the tendencies of photographic expression, influence of photografhic picture to penetration into other media and branches in the social environment of new opinions and thinking after World War I. I considered it important to point to reversed flow of ideas, i.e. from other fields of human activity towards photography. This concerns especially the area of scientific research in chemistry, physics and technology and imaging tools where the development of new photographic and closely related film technology was projected back both to artistic and general social levels.
