Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom predkladanej diplomovej práce je ponúknuť obraz ľudí so zdravotným postihnutím tak, ako je prezentovaný samotným ľuďmi s postihnutím prostredníctvom stránok sociálnych médií a blogov. Obsahová analýza šiestich vybraných internetových stránok spoločne so sémiotickou analýzou vybraných ukážok z ich obsahu si kladie za cieľ zachytiť ich reprezentáciu postihnutia a daný obraz interpretovať vo vzťahu k širšiemu kultúrnemu kontextu. Mediálne obrazy tvoria jeden z najdôležitejších zdrojov súčasných predstáv o osobách a živote s postihnutím, pri čom mnoho akademikov a aktivistov upozorňuje na často opakujúce sa motívy umocňujúce stereotypné predstavy v obsahu všetkých typov tradičných masmediálnych kanálov. Je obraz v danej časti blogosféry odlišný? Ak áno, v ktorých ohľadoch? Aké sú ústredné témy jej predstaviteľov? Je vytvorený obraz zhodný na všetkých sledovaných stránkach alebo sú pohľady ich administrátorov odlišné? Práca rovnako ponúka vhľad do súčasných teoretických konceptov ohľadom postihnutia relevantných pre určený výskumný problém z kontextu tzv. disability studies, akými sú medicínsky, sociálny či „kladný“ prístup k definícií postihnutia; koncept „ableism,“ západné masmediálne modely postihnutia a problematické aspekty samotného pojmu „disability.“

Abstract:

The main goal of the thesis is to explore the image of disability as it is portrayed in blogs and a networking site project collecting mostly visual presentations of people with disabilities administrated by the people with impairments themselves. The content analysis of the six selected websites together with the semiotic analysis of the chosen content examples, aims to describe their representation of disability and to interpret it in relation to broader cultural context. Media representation is one of the important sources of societal images and cultural understandings of disability. Many scholars and disability activists criticize the way mainstream media portray differently-abled people, bringing attention to recurring mental associations and repeating formulas enforcing stereotypes, which are found excessively across all the types of traditional mass media. Is the image presented in the chosen part of the disability blogosphere different? If so, in what manner? What are the main concerns of its representatives? Is it the same "kind" of disability in all of these web-pages or the views are too heterogeneous? The thesis also provides a theoretical background which inspires such questions, dealing mostly with intersections of disability, its societal representations and media portrayals; introducing the reader to the main conceptual frames and research findings of the growing social-science field of disability studies relevant to the presented research design, such as medical, social and affirmative models of disability; concept of “ableism;” Western mass-media models of disability; and the problematic nature of the word “disability” itself.
