The life and work of František Bakule in the context of the special pedagogy conception of his time

Abstract:

Diplomová práce si klade za cíl pohlédnout na práci Františka Bakuleho v kontextu dobového pojetí speciální pedagogiky. Snaží se nalézt odpověď na otázku proč, přestože v té době existovalo více snah o podobné pokusné školy, se právě Bakuleho práce a nové výchovně-vzdělávací metody setkávaly s odporem a překážkami nejen ze strany školských úřadů, ale i jeho spolupracovníků. Hledá také příčiny Bakuleho názorového rozchodu s prof. Rudolfem Jedličkou, který ho zpočátku výrazně podporoval. Diplomovou práci tvoří tří části, z nichž každá je rozdělená na další podkapitoly. První část je věnována speciální pedagogice obecně, jejímu vzniku a změnám přístupu společnosti k osobám s postižením. Druhá se zaměřuje na péči o jedince s postižením v období pozdního Rakouska-Uherska a první republiky – popisuje vznik a podobu ústavních zařízení pro osoby s tělesným postižením a také nejvýznamější osobnostem tehdejší somatopedie. Třetí část se již věnuje přímo osobnosti Františka Bakuleho – jeho životu, rané pedagogické činnosti a jeho práci v Jedličkově ústavu (včetně toho, jakou cestou se Jedličkův ústav ubíral po jeho odchodu). Následně popisuje Bakuleho další činnost, konkrétně Bakulův ústav pro výchovu životem a prací a pěvecký sbor Bakuleho zpěváčci. Nakonec je vylíčen ohlas, jenž dílo Františka Bakuleho vzbudilo v zahraničí.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis aims to look at the work of František Bakule in the context of special pedagogy of his epoch. It tries to answer the question why – though there also were some other experimental schools in the same period – it was primarily Bakule’s work and his pedagogical methods that met with opposition and obstructions not only from educational authorities, but also from his colleagues. The thesis also searches for the causes of Bakule’s disagreement with Professor Rudolf Jedlička, who was initially his great supporter. The text consists of three parts split into several subchapters. The first part deals with special pedagogy in general, describing its origins and historical changes of society’s approach to disabled people. The second part concentrates on care for disabled individuals in the period of late Austro-Hungaria and the First Czechoslovak Republic – it describes establishment and functioning of institutional facilities for physically disabled people and characterizes the most important figures of special pedagogy. The third part already deals with František Bakule himself, depicting his life, his early pedagogical career and his work at Jedlička’s Institute (including the characterization of development of this Institute after Bakule’s leave). Next, it describes Bakule’s further activities, specifically his “Institute for the Education via Life and Work” and his children choir “Bakule’s Little Singers”. Finally, reactions to František Bakule’s work in foreign countries are being portrayed.
