Factors affecting spatial distribution of air temperature in urban environment

Abstract:

Koncept LCZ je v dnešní době širokou vědeckou veřejností uznávaným standardem při výzkumu klimatu města. Klasifikace je založena na deseti faktorech, na jejichž základě je možné povrch města jednoznačně zařadit buď mezi zastavěné plochy anebo mezi třídy popisující využití povrchu. Podmínky středoevropských měst znemožňují prostorově měřit nebo modelovat některé faktory na úrovni místního klimatu (např. sky view faktor, tepelná jímavost, hustota tepelného toku). Cílem předkládané disertační práce bylo vytvořit vlastní klasifikační schéma LCZ na základě faktorů, které primárně podmiňují diferenciaci teplotních poměrů ve městech středoevropského typu. Dalším cílem práce bylo vytvoření nového objektivně založeného algoritmu pro tvorbu LCZ, jež by zohledňoval důležitost nově vytvořených faktorů. Na základě studia vlivu okolí na teplotní charakteristiky stanice byly vybrány čtyři nejobjektivněji měřitelné faktory, které nejpřesněji popisují charakter okolí stanice a zároveň jsou jednoduše dostupné: procento ploch zastavěných budovami (BSF), procento ploch tvořených nepropustnými povrchy, mimo budovy (ISF), procento ploch tvořené propustnými povrchy (PSF), výška zástavby a vegetace (HRE). Tyto čtyři základní faktory byly doplněny o pátý, počet budov (NoB). Důležitým předpokladem pro analýzu bylo kvalitní zpracování datových zdrojů, zejména výšky budov. V průběhu zpracování byla vytvořena vlastní metodika pro zpracování vybraných faktorů z dostupných datových zdrojů. Jako vstupní data pro rozhodovací algoritmus sloužily hodnoty faktorů v mapovací buňce o rozměru 100 × 100 m, na jejichž základě byla buňka zařazena do třídy LCZ. Pomocí algoritmu byly klasifikovány LCZ pro pět měst na území České republiky: Brno, Hradec Králové, Olomouc, Ostravu a Prahu. Hlavními přínosy disertační práce byly: vytvoření rozhodovacího algoritmu pro klasifikaci LCZ a kvantifikace vlivu vybraných faktorů na formování specifických rysů prostorové variability teploty vzduchu ve městě a na formování tepelného ostrova města. LCZ pro všechna města byla srovnána s expertně klasifikovanými buňkami. Výsledky prokázaly, že středoevropská města vykazují typickou prostorovou strukturu LCZ, která se projevuje od centra měst směrem k jejich okrajům. I venkovská sídla v okolích měst pravidelně vytváří specifické struktury zastavěných tříd. LCZ pro Brno a Prahu byly validovány pomocí povrchových teplot (LST) vypočtených z družic LANDSAT-8 a Terra ASTER. Na závěr byly LCZ pro Brno použity jako hlavní vstup pro prostorové modelování teplotního pole. Pro analýzu denního chodu teploty vzduchu během tropických dní byl použit termodynamický model MUKLIMO_3. Ve vybraných zastavěných zónách s vysokým procentem zastavěných a nepropustných ploch (LCZ 2, 3, 8 a 10) se prokázal výskyt vyšších teplot vzduchu i povrchových teplot. Naopak zastavěné zóny s nižší výškou budov i mírou zástavby, ale s větším množstvím vyšší vegetace (LCZ 6 a 9) potvrdily menší náchylnost k výskytu vyšších teplot vzduchu i povrchových teplot. Vymezení a popis prostorového rozložení LCZ je klíčovým krokem ke studiu městského klimatu na místní ale i regionální úrovni. Tato problematika však vyžaduje budoucí výzkum a potvrzení relevance konceptu.

Abstract:

LCZ concept was recently accepted by the scientific community as a standard in urban climate research. This classification is based on the ten factors that enable to categorize the surface of the city either between the built-up or land cover classes. Some factors space factors in the Central European cities are difficult to measure or model (e.g. sky sight factor, surface admittance, and anthropogenic heat flux) at the local climate level. The main aim of this work was a creation of new classification scheme LCZ based on factors, which primarily differentiates the temperature conditions in the central European cities. Moreover, this project plans to develop a new objectively based algorithm for LCZ reflecting the crucial factors. According to the study of the influence of the surrounding area on the station's thermal characteristics, the four most objectively measurable factors were selected: building surface fraction (BSF), impervious surface fraction, without buildings (ISF), pervious surface fraction (PSF) and height of the buildings, plants and vegetation (HRE). These four basic factors were extended by the fifth factor, the number of buildings (NoB). Additionally, an important prerequisite for the analysis was the quality pre-processing of data sources, esp. the height of buildings. While processing the data we developed the new methodology, which accounts the selected factors from available data sources with better accuracy. As the input data were used factor values in a 100 × 100 m mapping cell and our own decision-making algorithm delineated the cell to the LCZ classes. Using the algorithm, LCZs were classified for five cities in the Czech Republic: Brno, Hradec Králové, Olomouc, Ostrava and Prague. The main outputs of this dissertation are the development of the decision algorithm for LCZ delineation, the quantification of selected factors influenced by the formation of specific features based on spatial variability of the air temperature in the city and on the formation of the urban heat island. Finally, LCZs for selected cities were compared with expert-based classified cells. The results suggested that the Central European cities exhibit a typical spatial structure of built-up LCZs, which is reflected from the city centre towards its edges. Even rural settlements around the city regularly create specific structures of built-up classes. LCZs for Brno and Prague were validated using surface temperatures (LST) calculated from two satellites (LANDSAT-8 and Terra ASTER). Nevertheless, the LCZ for Brno was used as an input for the spatial modelling of the air temperature. The thermodynamic model MUKLIMO_3 was used for spatial distribution analysis of daily air temperature during tropical days. Selected built-up areas with a high percentage of built-up and impervious surfaces (LCZ 2, 3, 8 and 10) showed higher air and surface temperatures. On the contrary, built-up areas with lower buildings height, building density and higher vegetation (LCZ 6 and 9) confirmed a lower susceptibility to higher air and surface temperatures. The definition and description of the LCZ spatial layout was a key step in the urban climate research at local or regional level. Despite these findings, the further research is required for the concept accuracy verification.
