Explanation of overbidding

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je rozlišit mezi dvěma základními vysvětleními overbiddingu, kterými jsou nestandardní preference a nerovnovážná očekávání. K tomu byl využit ekonomický experiment se dvěma nastaveními, přičemž první odpovídá klasické loterii a druhé využívá tzv. strategy method, při které si subjekty nemohou vytvořit nerovnovážná očekávání. Pomocí analýzy nasbíraných dat však docházíme k závěru, že overbidding se pro jednotlivá nastavení statisticky významně neliší, což naznačuje, že hlavní příčinou jeho přítomnosti jsou zde nestandardní preference subjektů.

Abstract:

The objective of this master thesis is to distinguish between two fundamental explanations of overbidding that are non-standard preferences and disequilibrium expectations. For this, an economic experiment with two settings was used. The first setting corresponds to the classic lottery and the second one uses the strategy method, in which subjects cannot create disequilibrium expectations. However, by analysing the collected data, we come to the conclusion that there are not statistically significant differences in overbidding between the two settings, which suggests that the main reason for the occurrence of overbidding are non-standard preferences of subjects.
