Biology of marine early emerging apicomplexans

Abstract:

Kmen Apicomplexa je jednou z nejsledovanějších skupin jednobuněčných parazitů, obývajících téměř všechny známé skupiny mnohobuněčných. Mnozí z nich jsou původci významných onemocnění lidí a domácích zvířat, a proto jsou intenzivně studováni. Mezi zástupci Apicomplexa však existuje řada málo probádaných raných skupin. Tyto raně vzniklé linie jsou zastoupeny malými fylogeneticky vzdálenými skupinami, které parazitují výhradně bezobratlé. Tato práce je věnována několika druhům výše uvedených skupin a to: Rhytidocystis sp. (Rhytidocystidae: Agamococcidiorida), Siedleckia nematoides a Chatonaria mesnili (Siedleckiidae a Chattonariidae: Blastogregarinida); Eleutheroschizon duboscqi (Eleutheroschizonidae: Protococcidiida). Dále jsme studovali několik druhů gregarin, např. Selenidium pygospionis a S. pherusae (Selenidiidae: Archigregarinida). Z řádu Eugregarinida byli studováni následovní zástupci: Urospora ovalis, U. travisiae a U. chiridotae (Urosporidae), Gonospora varia (Gonosporidae), Lecudina sp. (Lecudinidae), Ancora sagittata (Ancoridae), Ganymedes yurii (Ganymedidae) a Cephaloidophora cf. communis (Cephaloidophoridae). Morfologické srovnání ukázalo, že eugregariny sdílejí společný rys a to přítomnost záhybů epicytu na povrchu. Archigregariny a blastogregariny vykazují podobnosti ve stavbě buněčného kortexu, architektuře apikálního konce a v motilitě. Protokokcidie E. duboscqi sdílí některé rysy s kryptosporidiemi a gregarinami. Molekulární fylogenetická analýza potvrdila morfologické data a to, že studované druhy tvoří na fylogenetických stromech oddělené vzdálenější skupiny: Agamococcidia, Blastogregarinida, Archigregarinida. Studované eugregariny vytvářejí různé podvětve uvnitř větve Eugregarinida + Neogregarinida.

Abstract:

The phylum Apicomplexa is one of the most monitored group of unicellular parasites inhabiting almost all known groups of metazoan organisms. Many of them are actively studied as they cause important human and domestic animal diseases. Nevertheless, among apicomplexans, there is a number of early emergent lineages that are studied rather poorly. These basal lineages are represented by small phylogenetically far-distant groups parasitising exclusively the invertebrates. This thesis is dedicated to several species of aforementioned groups: Rhytidocystis sp. (Rhytidocystidae: Agamococcidiorida), Siedleckia nematoides and Chatonaria mesnili (Siedleckiidae and Chattonariidae [respectively]: Blastogregarinida); and Eleutheroschizon duboscqi (Eleutheroschizonidae: Protococcidiida). We also studied several gregarine species e.g. Selenidium pygospionis and S. pherusae (Selenidiidae: Archigregarinida). In addition, several representatives of the order Eugregarinida were investigated: Urospora ovalis, U. travisiae and U. chiridotae (Urosporidae), Gonospora varia (Gonosporidae), Lecudina sp. (Lecudinidae), Ancora sagittata (Ancoridae), Ganymedes yurii (Ganymedidae) and Cephaloidophora cf. communis (Cephaloidophoridae). Morphological comparison showed that eugregarines share a common feature, i.e. the presence of the epicytic fold on their surface. Archigregarines and blastogregarines exhibit similarities in cell cortex, architecture of apical end and motility. Protococcidian E. duboscqi possesses features common to Cryptosporidium spp. and gregarines. The molecular-phylogenetic analysis confirmed the morphological data, i.e. on the phylogenetic trees the studied species form separate far-distant groups: Agamococcidia, Blastogregarinida and Archigregarinida. Studied eugregarines affiliate to different subclades within Eugregarinida + Neogregarinida superclade.
