Kounicova street in Brno - Building and urban development

Abstract:

The thesis is focused on the architectural and urban development of today's Kounicova Street in Brno, during the approximately two hundred and fifty years, from the beginning of its formation in the 1880s to the present day. The work examines the street from two different perspectives - on one hand, it analyses its urban development and explores it as a whole and moreover, as a part of the Brno urban organism; on the other hand, it deals with individual works of architecture, with focus on the public and school buildings built from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The central premise of the thesis is the claim that Kounicova Street was to become an important city boulevard in the interwar period, a claim that can be easily found in the literature. The aim of the thesis is to verify this claim on the basis of examination of contemporary urban designs and regulatory plans, together with an analysis of both realised and unrealised architectural plans, and at the same time to confront it with the present image of the street. In addition, the thesis aims to analyse the buildings that are little or hardly mentioned in the existing literature, to place them in a broader context and thus contribute to the overall issue of Brno's architecture.

Abstract:

Práca sa venuje architektonickému a urbanistickému vývoju dnešnej Kounicovej ulice v Brne, počas zhruba dvestopäťdesiatich rokov od počiatku jej formovania v osemdesiatych rokoch 18. storočia až po súčasnosť. Na ulicu hľadí z dvoch uhlov pohľadu – na jednej strane analyzuje jej urbanizmus a skúma ju ako celok, ktorý je navyše súčasťou brnianskeho mestského organizmu, na strane druhej sa zaoberá jednotlivými architektonickými realizáciami, pričom ťažiskom sú verejné a školské stavby budované od konca 19. do začiatku 21. storočia. Ústrednou tézou práce je tvrdenie, že Kounicova ulica sa v medzivojnovom období mala stať významnou veľkomestskou triedou, ktoré sa nezriedka objavuje v literatúre. Cieľom práce je na základe rozboru súdobých urbanistických zámerov a regulačných plánov a súčasne analýzy realizovanej, ale i nerealizovanej architektúry overiť toto tvrdenie a zároveň ho konfrontovať so súčasnou podobou ulice. Okrem toho si práca kladie za cieľ podrobiť analýze stavby, o ktorých sa existujúca literatúra zmieňuje len málo, alebo takmer vôbec, zasadiť ich do širšieho kontextu a prispieť tak k celkovej problematike architektúry Brna.
