The lignite deposits on Iceland, their geology and mining history

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá detailním popisem ložisek lignitu na Islandu, jejich geologií a historií těžby. Pozornost je věnována několika vlnám zájmu o tuto surovinu. Těžba na ostrově probíhala převážně během I. sv. války, kdy se obyvatelé ostrova potýkali s nedostatkem uhlí z dovozu a proto bylo potřeba hledat nová řešení energetické situace. V menší míře byl lignit těžen i za II. sv. války, v 80. letech minulého století pak probíhalo studium vybraných ložisek za účelem ověření rentabilnosti znovuzahájení těžby.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis describes lignite depositions in Iceland, their geology and mining history. Attention is given to several wave of interest in this material throughout the 20th century. Mining on the island was mostly during the I. World War, when the inhabitants of the island faced with a shortage of coal imports and therefore need to seek new solutions to the energy situation. The lignite was mined also during the II. World War, but in a smaller extent. In the 80s of last century, the study was performed selected deposits in order to verify the profitability resumption of mining.
