Differences in the pronunciation of consonants in final positions among Czech and Slovak students

Abstract:

This thesis concerns with the analysis of the final consonants’ pronunciation of Czech and Slovak students studying a French bilingual high schools in Banská Bystrica and Brno. Its main goal is to find out whether the assimilation is more frequent among the students of Czech or Slovak nationality and whether it is Czech or Slovak who approach the general orthoepic norm of contemporary French more. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first, theoretical part briefly presents the consonant systems of the three studied languages and focuses on their main differences. The goal is to stress the most important difficulties French that one encounters when learning French as a foreign language. The thesis puts the emphasis on the review of voicing assimilation, especially when a consonant is in the final position of the word, where the rules of assimilation of the studied languages differ. The second, methodological part explains in detail the course of the research conducted at the high schools. There we present the Praat program which enables objective analysis of speech and so more professional evaluation of the records. The third, analytical part presents the results of the research. It is split into three chapters. The first chapter compares the pronunciation of the consonants and the particular realisations of voicing assimilation among Czech and Slovak students. It does so, in two different contexts: within the word and between two words. In the second chapter, we focus on the consonant pair /t-d/ and its voicing in the words pronounced on the basis of three various supports: a record of the native speaker, a written text and in the spontaneous speech. The last chapter focuses on the pair of consonants /ʃ-ʒ/ with the goal to discover, who among the research participants better perceives the differences in their pronunciation and who better reaches the correct articulation of these differences. The results of the analysis confirmed that the pronunciation of final consonants causes difficulties to both Czech and Slovak students in the approximately same degree. It is why, in its conclusion, the thesis points out the necessity to dedicate more attention to this issue during the French classes at high school level.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou výslovnosti koncových souhlásek u slovenských a českých žáků studujících na francouzských bilingválních gymnáziích v Banské Bystrici a v Brně. Hlavním cílem práce je zjistit, zda je asimilace frekventovanější u studentů české nebo slovenské národnosti a zda se obecné ortoepické normě výslovnosti současné francouzštiny přibližují více Češi nebo Slováci. Práce je rozdělena na tři části. První, teoretická část práce nejprve stručně představuje konsonantické systémy třech studovaných jazyků a zaměřuje se na jejich hlavní odlišnosti. Cílem je poukázat na největší potíže při osvojování francouzštiny jako cizího jazyka. Důraz je dále kladen především na přehled asimilací znělosti, zejména ve finální pozici souhlásky ve slově, kde se pravidla asimilace v námi studovaných jazycích liší. Druhá, metodologická část práce detailně přibližuje průběh výzkumu na gymnáziích. Představujeme zde také program Praat, který umožňuje objektivní analýzu řeči, a tedy vědečtější evaluaci získaných nahrávek. Třetí, analytická část práce prezentuje výsledky terénního výzkumu. Dále je členěna do tří kapitol. První kapitola srovnává realizace konsonant a jednotlivé případy asimilace znělosti u českých a slovenských studentů, a to ve dvou různých kontextech: uvnitř slova a na hranici slov. Ve druhé kapitole se věnujeme souhláskovému páru /t-d/ a spodobám znělosti ve slovech vyslovovaných na základě tří různých mentálních opor: nahrávek rodilého mluvčího, psaného textu a nakonec ve spontánním projevu podle paměti. Poslední kapitola se zaměřuje na znělostní pár /š-ž/ a dává si za cíl zjistit, kdo z účastníků výzkumu lépe vnímá rozdíly v jejich výslovnosti a dokáže dané rozdíly i správně artikulovat. Výsledky analýz potvrdily, že výslovnost koncových souhlásek působí českým a slovenským žákům značné potíže, a to zhruba ve stejné míře. Ve svém závěru proto práce poukazuje na potřebu věnovat této problematice v hodinách francouzštiny na středních školách větší pozornost.
