Political Development of Zimbabwe after Independence

Abstract:

Zimbabwe, republika, jejíž ekonomika patří v současnosti mezi nejhorší na světě. Více jak polovina obyvatelstva žije pod hranicí chudoby, nedostatek jídla, velká nezaměstnanost, inflace a především politika represí reprezentovaná vládnoucí stranou ZANU-PF Roberta Mugabeho vůči opozici, vedenou Morganem Tsvangiraiem z Hnutí pro demokratickou změnu, ke zlepšení situace nepřispívá. Cílem diplomové práce je analyzovat a popsat politickou situaci, ve které se země nachází. Zmapovat politický vývoj v kontextu přechodu k jednostranickému politickému režimu především od roku 1980, kdy se republika stala nezávislou na Velké Británii. Dále zmapovat formování hlavních politických uskupení.

Abstract:

National economy of Zimbabwe is considered to be one of the weakest economies in the entire world. More than a half of Zimbabwe's population lives below the poverty level. Lack of food, high inflation and large-scale unemployment have become major problems. The Zanu-PF party led by Robert Mugabe is currently ruling the country. Its policy of repression against the opposition being represented by Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change makes the situation even worse. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the political situation and to describe the nature of Zimbabwe's political regime during the reign of Robert Mugabe. It maps the political development in the context of transition to a one-party political system, especially during the period since the year 1980, when the republic became independent from Great Britain. The thesis presents an overview on the process of forming of main political groups and movements.
