Social Mobility and its Sociological Reflection in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o sociální mobilitě jako součásti stratifikačních systémů společností. Nerovnosti mezi lidmi v přístupu k ekonomickým a sociálním zdrojům existují ve všech společnostech. Práce kriticky hodnotí problematiku teoretického konceptu sociální mobility. Věnuje se historii sociálně mobilitního výzkumu a reflexi hypotéz tzv. generací sociálně mobilitních výzkumníků. Dále zmiňuje zanedbávané téma ženy ve výzkumu sociální mobility a pojednává o metodologii sociálně mobilitního výzkumu. Práce se také zabývá důsledky sociální mobility pro společnost a pro jedince. V existujících teoriích sociální mobility jsou hledány odpovědi na otázku po důvodech sociální mobility. Sociální změna je neoddělitelnou součástí současných společností. Míra sociální reprodukce převyšuje míru sociální změny, protože přenos sociálních nerovností udržuje sociální řád a organizaci nutnou pro přežití společnosti. Hlavním mediátorem přenosu nerovností v současných společnostech je vzdělávací systém. Stále je rozšířen askriptivní přenos sociálních výhod, ale na významu nabývají i vlastní zásluhy jedince.

Abstract:

This paper discusses social mobility as a part of the stratification systems of societies. Inequalities in access to the economic and social resources exist among people in all human societies. This paper reviews the problematic of the theoretical concept of social mobility. It attends to the history of the social mobility research and reviews the hypotheses of the so-called generations of the social mobility researchers. It further refers to the disregarded topic of women in the social mobility research and discusses the methodology of the social mobility research. The paper also considers the consequences of the social mobility for the society and for individuals. The answers to the inquire for the reasons of social mobility are sought in the existing social mobility theories. The social change is an inseparable part of contemporary societies. The rate of the social reproduction exceeds the rate of the social change because the transmission of the social inequalities sustains the social order and the organization essential for the survival of the society. The main mediator of the transmission of social inequalities in contemporary societies is the educational system. The attributed transmission of social inequalities is still extended but the importance of the self-credit of the individual is intensifying as well.
