Aristocracy of Taste. Patronage and collecting activities of the counts of Salm-Reifferscheidt in 19th century

Abstract:

U příslušníků šlechty se kladný vztah k umění a dobrý vkus všeobecně předpokládají, výtvarné zájmy aristokracie však měly mnoho vrstev a podob. Salm-Reifferscheidtové nevynikali ani rozsáhlým pozemkovým vlastnictvím jako Schwarzenbergové, ani pohádkovým bohatstvím jako Liechtensteinové, se kterými byli blízce spřízněni. Hned v několika generacích se však významně projevili svými vědeckými, literárními a uměleckými zájmy. Jejich zaujetí architekturou a výtvarným uměním přitom nebylo motivován jen obvyklou potřebou vizuální reprezentace. U některých příslušníků rodu se jednalo o osobní zálibu, nebo dokonce vášeň, projevovanou občas vedle sběratelství a mecenášství také diletantskou uměleckou tvorbou. Proto „aristokracie vkusu“. Starobylý rod Salm-Reifferscheidtů odvozuje svůj původ od Gerarda z Reifferscheidtu († 1194), jenž založil na hradě Reifferscheidt v Porýní nedaleko Trevíru dynastii, která přetrvala dodnes. Díky úspěšné sňatkové a dědické politice získal rod ve 14. a 15. století mj. významné hrabství Nieder Salm (Dolní Salm) v Alsasku, od něhož se odvozuje dnešní podoba rodového jména. Rájeckou rodovou linii založil Antonín Karel Josef starohrabě ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1720–1769), nejmladší syn vojáka a diplomata působícího v habsburských službách Františka Viléma starohraběte ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1672–1734). Vesnice Rájec byla od druhé poloviny 17. století v majetku rodu Roggendorfů. Od své ženy Marie Anny Rafaely rozené hraběnky z Roggendorfu (1726–1807) a jejích příbuzných získal Antonín Karel Josef ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu panství Rájec se statkem Jedovnice v roce 1763 a o tři roky později přikoupil ještě sousední biskupský lenní statek Blansko. Od té doby jsou dějiny Salm-Reifferscheidtů úzce spojeny s Moravou a s oblastí Moravského Švýcarska (dnešního Moravského krasu). Starohrabě od počátku počítal s hospodářským využitím nově získaných panství a vytvořením stabilního ekonomického zázemí rodiny, zároveň si zvolil Rájec za místo novostavby venkovského sídla, které mělo majiteli sloužit k odpočinku a zotavení v obdobích, kdy byl uvolněn ze svých dvorských povinností a diplomatických úkolů. Rájecký zámek měl svojí reprezentativností odrážet jeho vysoké postavení ve strukturách tehdejší dvorské aristokracie, zároveň se stal majorátním sídlem nově založené větve Salm-Reifferscheidtů. Současně s výstavbou rájeckého zámku, probíhající v letech 1763–1769, se jeho stavebník Antonín Karel Josef starohrabě ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1720–1769) zaměřil i na postupné vybavení nového sídla obrazy a dalšími uměleckými předměty. Kultivované prostředí Liechtensteinského dvora, v němž vyrůstal – poručníkem starohraběte byl milovník umění a mecenáš Josef Václav I. kníže z Liechtensteinu (1696–1772) –, formovalo jeho hluboký zájem o architekturu a výtvarné umění. Rájecká obrazárna proto od svého založení patřila mezi nejvýznamnější šlechtické umělecké kolekce na Moravě. V oblasti starého umění si dodnes uchovala charakter, jaký nabyla na konci šedesátých let 18. století, neboť k většímu rozšiřování – s výjimkou maleb získaných z majetku Dietrichsteinů zároveň s Dietrichsteinským hraběcím palácem na dnešní Masarykově ulici v Brně, zakoupeným Salm-Reifferscheidty v roce 1784 –, ale ani k výrazným ztrátám v dalších obdobích již nedošlo. Prosperita rájecké větve rodu Salm-Reifferscheidtů byla v 19. století vedle výnosů z pozemkového vlastnictví založena zejména na úspěšném průmyslovém podnikání, nejprve v oboru hutnictví železa, později též v potravinářském průmyslu (cukrovar, pivovar) a těžařství (uhlí). Železárny na Blanensku založil na sklonku 17.

století Arnošt Leopold hrabě z Gellhornu, a když přešlo blanenské panství v roce 1766 do držení Salm-Reifferscheidtů, byly zde v provozu již dvě vysoké pece a tři kující výhně. Po roce 1811 prosadil Hugo I. František starohrabě ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1776–1836) orientaci na progresivní výrobu litiny. Díky zprovoznění jedné z prvních kuploven v českých zemích se dosavadní produkce rozšířila o předměty užitého umění, odlévané zpočátku podle modelů sléváren v Berlíně či hornoslezských Gliwicích, později podle návrhů blanenských modelérů. K dalšímu rozvoji salmovských železářských podniků došlo po angažování předního evropského odborníka na metalurgii Karla Reichenbacha. Blanenské litinové výrobky vynikaly především kvalitou, kterou převyšovaly veškerou produkci slévárenských podniků v habsburské monarchii a konkurovaly nejvyspělejším evropským producentům. Na soudobých průmyslových výstavách byly oceňovány zejména technologicky náročné odlitky rozměrných monumentálních soch podle antických vzorů. Přímo pro interiéry rájeckého zámku vznikla většina obrazů shromážděných postupně v letech 1818–1826 z iniciativy Josepha von Hormayr zu Hortenburg (1781–1848). Tento významný rakouský historik, publicista a politik byl za plánování protinapoleonského povstání od roku 1813 dočasně vězněn na Špilberku. Po Napoleonově pádu o rok později mu bylo umožněno vyměnit zdi vězení za dvouletý nucený pobyt v Brně, kde se sblížil s Hugem I. Františkem starohrabětem ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1876–1836). Ten mu nabídl možnost využívat pohostinství zámku Rájec, kde společensky zdiskreditovaný a životem těžce zkoušený Hormayr dočasně nalezl svůj druhý domov. Počátky Hormayrovy mecenášské činnosti spojené s Rájcem byly jednoznačně ovlivněny příkladem arcivévody Jana Rakouského a jeho galerie dvaceti čtyř obrazů ze středověkých dějin habsburského rodu na dolnorakouském hradě Thernberg z let 1808–1815. Po domluvě se starohrabětem Hugem I. Františkem a zejména jeho manželkou Marií Josefou rozenou Mac Caffry of Keanmore (1775–1836) začal Hormayr v Rájci systematicky budovat podobnou galerii obrazů tematizujících historii rakouského vládnoucího domu, k jejíž realizaci přizval Karla Russa, dlouholetého „komorního malíře“ arcivévody Jana. Ve shodě se starohraběnkou Marií Josefou, do jejíchž soukromých pokojů byly Russovy historické obrazy určeny a jíž Hormayr zamýšlel celou kolekci od počátku věnovat, rozšířil posléze svůj záběr také o díla ilustrující romantické literární předlohy. Jejich realizaci objednával v ateliérech dalších spřátelených umělců (Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Peter Fendi, Josef von Führich). Některé z rájeckých obrazů inspirovaly svými náměty soudobé spisovatele nebo muzikanty, třeba slavného hudebního skladatele Franze Schuberta. Zatímco v dnešním jazyce má označení „diletant“ negativní význam, původní italské, z latiny odvozené sloveso „dilettare“ znamenalo někoho, nebo sama sebe, „potěšit“, či „pobavit“. Jako „dilettanti“ byli od 16. století označováni šlechtičtí amatérští hudebníci hrající pro vlastní zábavu, později se tento výraz rozšířil i do dalších uměleckých oborů. Výtvarný diletant tvořil bez nároku na profesionální uplatnění pouze pro potěšení své a svých blízkých. Umělecký diletantismus ve smyslu ušlechtilé zábavy vyžadoval odpovídající sociální zajištění, byl proto od počátku provozován zejména v aristokratickém prostředí. Navíc praktické zvládnutí kresby bylo považováno za nezbytné pro vzdělání mladého aristokrata, neboť mu mělo poskytnout potřebnou orientaci v pevnostní i profánní architektuře. V průběhu 18. století toto utilitaristické pojetí stále více ustupovalo výchově k volné umělecké tvorbě, se kterou se setkáváme po roce 1800 i u rájeckých Salm-Reifferscheidtů. Výuka kresby probíhala v případě šlechtice podobně, jako u začínajících umělců. Od napodobování jednoduchých tvarů přes části figur po celé postavy a složitější kompozice. Jako vodítko sloužily učebnice různé úrovně opatřené většinou obrazovými předlohami. Oblíbeným žánrem bylo krajinářství umožňující šlechtickému kavalírovi na cestách zaznamenávat navštívená místa a pamětihodnosti. Zatímco k základům kresby vedl mladého aristokrata jeho hofmistr (=vychovatel), v pokročilejších fázích byl již často angažován přímo praktikující umělec. Kolem roku 1820 byla umělecká výuka mladých Salm-Reifferscheidtů svěřena vídeňskému malíři Ludwigu Ferdinandovi Schnorrovi von Carolsfeld, v další generaci to byl zase oblíbený pražský krajinář Bedřich Havránek, jehož nejnadanějším žákem se stal Siegfried starohrabě ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1835–1898), autor vynikajících grafik profesionální úrovně. V první polovině 19. století patřili u nás příslušníci šlechty stále ještě k hlavním podporovatelům vědeckého, kulturního a uměleckého života. Hugo II. Karel Eduard kníže ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1803–1888) nastoupil v roce 1826 úřední kariéru v Praze, kde žil po sňatku s Leopoldinou rozenou princeznou ze Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheimu (1805–1878) až do poloviny padesátých let. Aktivně se zapojil do společenského a kulturního života české metropole, zejména do činnosti tamní Společnosti vlasteneckých přátel umění a přidružené Krasoumné jednoty. Prostřednictvím nákupů na pražských výročních výstavách shromáždil vynikající kolekci pozdně romantického malířství se zvláštním zaměřením na soudobou krajinomalbu, jejíž větší část se dodnes dochovala. Také umělci, které zaměstnával, pocházeli v tomto období přirozeně z místního prostředí. Na prvním místě to byl mladý absolvent Akademie v Praze Josef von Führich, který kromě dvou kresebných cyklů Elfové a Runová hora vytvořil pro Huga II. Karla Eduarda pozoruhodnou rodinnou podobiznu, o dva roky později parafrázovanou známým českým malířem Josefem Vojtěchem Hellichem. Při adaptaci a výzdobě nově zakoupeného reprezentativního pražského paláce Salm-Reifferscheidtů (dnes Kounický palác) v Panské ulici využil Hugo II. Karel Eduard služeb umělců, s nimiž se setkával v proslulém, výtvarně orientovaném salonu Františka mladšího hraběte z Thun-Hohensteinu. Na prvním místě to byl Engelbert Seibertz, německý malíř působící ve čtyřicátých letech v Praze, který na objednávku Salm-Reifferscheidtů vytvořil několik desítek, často svých vůbec nejlepších děl. Český krajinář Bedřich Havránek, který rovněž navštěvoval Thunův salon, se zase staral o uměleckou výuku dětí Huga II. Karla Eduarda a pobýval opakovaně na moravských salmovských panstvích. Rakouský spisovatel Ferdinand von Saar přirovnal Alžbětu rozenou princeznu z Liechtensteinu (1832–1894) v nekrologu poněkud nadneseně ke slavným florentským renesančním mecenášům. Manželka Huga III. Karla Františka knížete ze Salm-Reifferscheidtu (1832–1890) však opravdu patřila v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech 19. století v habsburské monarchii k předním podporovatelkám umění. Ačkoli pocházela z vedlejší moravskokrumlovské větve Liechtensteinů, velkoryse navázala na liechtensteinské sběratelské a mecenášské tradice. Ve Vídni navštěvovala vyhlášený salon Josephiny a Franzisky von Wertheimstein, kde se setkávala s předními soudobými umělci. Kolem sebe pak shromažďovala vlastní salonní společnost ve Vídni a zejména v Blansku, kam spolu s manželem zvala spřátelené literáty, hudebníky a výtvarné umělce na hony a letní pobyty v srdci Moravského Švýcarska (dnešního Moravského krasu). Salm-Reifferscheidtové v této době obohatili rodové umělecké sbírky vedle exkluzivních podobizen, jejichž autory byli nejuznávanější portrétisté panovnických a aristokratických rodů (Heinrich von Angeli, Franz von Lenbach), převážně o díla autorů, s nimiž je pojilo přátelské pouto (Louis Gurlitt, Rudolf Carl Huber, Andreas Lach). K jejich přátelům patřil třeba norský krajinář Johan Nielssen, který maloval rovněž v okolí Rájce a Blanska, nebo slavný vídeňský „kníže malířů“ Hans Makart, jehož díla se však na rájeckém zámku nedochovala. Na konci sedmdesátých let 19. století se rodina Huga III. Karla Františka ve Florencii sblížila s proslulým švýcarským symbolistním malířem Arnoldem Böcklinem. Teprve nedávno se podařilo znovu objevit jeden ze dvou Böcklinových obrazů, které byly původně v majetku Salm-Reifferscheidtů.

Abstract:

An interest in art and good taste on the part of the aristocratic segment of society is something that is usually taken for granted. However, concrete examples reveal that the inclinations of the privileged towards art may take many different forms and exhibit a high degree of stratification. The Salm-Reifferscheidts were not major landowners like the Schwarzenbergs, nor did they have the fabulous wealth of the Liechtensteins to whom they were closely related. However, several generations of the family became renowned for their scientific, literary and artistic interests. Yet their interest in architecture and fine art was not strictly motivated by the familiar need for visual representation. For some members of the family it was a hobby, even a passion manifested, beyond art collecting and patronage, by dilettante art: hence the “aristocracy of taste”. The origins of the ancient family of Salm-Reifferscheidts are associated with Gerard of Reifferscheidt († 1194), who started at the Reifferscheidt castle near Trier, in the Rhine Basin a dynasty that has existed ever since. Due to successful marriage and inheritance policy, the family acquired, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the important Nieder Salm (Lower Salm) estate from which it derives its present name. The Rájec lineage begins with Anton Karl Joseph Altgrave of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1720–1769), the youngest son of Altgrave Franz Wilhelm Count of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1672–1734), a soldier and a diplomat in the Habsburg court. The village of Rájec was the property of the Roggendorf family from the second half of the 17th century. In 1763 Anton Karl Joseph of Salm-Reifferscheidt purchased the Rájec and Jedovnice demesnes from his wife, Countess Raphaela of Roggendorf (1718–1807) and her relatives. Three years later, in 1766, he added to them the episcopal vassal estate of Blansko. Since then, the history of the Salm-Reifferscheidts has been closely linked with Moravia and the area of “Moravian Switzerland” (today’s Moravian karst). From the onset, the altgrave’s main objective was the economic use of the newly acquired demesnes and the creation of a stable economic hinterland for his family. At the same time, he chose Rájec for the construction of his country house intended as a place of respite and relaxation in the times when the altgrave was free from his court duties and diplomatic missions. The representational character of the Rájec chateau was to reflect the altgrave’s high status among the court aristocracy, and the chateau soon became the seat of the new branch of the Salm-Reifferscheidt dynasty. In parallel with the construction of the Rájec chateau in 1763–1769 the investor, Anton Karl Joseph Altgrave of Salm-Reifferscheidt, paid attention to the lavish decoration of his new palace with paintings and other artefacts. The cultured milieu of the Liechtenstein court where he grew up (the altgrave’s guardian was Joseph Wenzel I Count of Liechtenstein, art lover and patron) significantly contributed to the young aristocrat’s interest in architecture and art. Since its establishment, the Rájec picture gallery counted among the most important aristocratic collections in Moravia. Its old art section has maintained the character it obtained in the late 1760s, as no major additions (or losses, for that matter) followed after the acquisition of paintings from the Dietrichstein property, bought by the Salm-Reifferscheidts together with the Dietrichstein palace in Brno in 1784. The estate inventory put together after Anton Karl Joseph’s unexpected passing in 1769 lists the total of 144 paintings. It conveys, among other things, the existence of a room on the ground floor of the chateau that contained a picture gallery, and a room decorated with French prints. le, by the layout of the legendary art collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy in the Belvedere, Vienna. The Rájec baroque collection comprised, apart from family portraits, landscapes, paintings with the motifs of animals and hunting and still lifes, also pictures with mythological, historical and religious subjects. Beyond the works of Dutch, Italian, French and, in particular, central European masters it featured a wealth of copies, as was common in the baroque period, most of them of high quality. The prosperity of the Rájec branch of the Salm-Reifferscheidts in the 19th century was fuelled, apart from profits from landowning, by successful business activities, first in metallurgy and later also in the food industry (sugar refinery, brewery) and mining (coal). Ironworks in the Blansko region were established in the late 17th century by Ernst Leopold Count of Gellhorn, and when the estate passed to the Salm-Reifferscheidts in 1766 two blast furnaces and three smelters operated there. After 1811 Hugo I Franz Altgrave of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1776–1836) introduced the progressive production of cast iron. Thanks to the launching of one of the first cupola furnaces in the Czech lands, the production was soon expanded with applied art objects, first cast after models from the ironworks in Berlin and Gliwice in Upper Silesia, and later designed by Blansko modellers. Further development of the Salm ironworks was connected with Karl Reichenbach, a leading European metallurgy expert. Blansko cast-iron products were characterised by high quality through which they surpassed the output of ironworks in the whole of the Habsburg monarchy and even competed with the largest European producers. Technologically demanding casts of monumental statues based on ancient models were regularly awarded at industrial exhibitions of the period. The majority of paintings gathered in 1818–1826 on the initiative of Joseph von Hormayr zu Hortenburg (1781–1848) were created directly for the interiors of the Rájec chateau. Hormayr was a major Austrian historian, journalist and politician imprisoned from 1813 at Spilberk in Brno for his participation in a planned anti-Napoleon coup. After Napoleon’s downfall in 1814 Hormayr was allowed to leave the Spilberk prison but had to stay for another two years in Brno where he befriended Hugo I Franz Altgrave of Salm-Reifferscheidt. The altgrave offered Hormayr to stay at the Rájec chateau where the socially discredited and ill-fated Hormayr found a temporary refuge. The beginnings of Hormayr’s art patronage in Rájec were clearly influenced by Archduke Johann of Austria and his gallery of twenty-four pictures from 1808–1815, illustrating the medieval history of the Habsburg dynasty and located in the Thernberg castle, Lower Austria. After an agreement with Altgrave Hugo I Franz and, in particular, his wife Maria Josepha, née Mac Caffry of Keanmore (1775–1836), Hormayr started to systematically build in Rájec a similar gallery of paintings devoted to the history of the ruling Austrian dynasty, to the execution of which he invited Karl Russ, a long-term “court painter” of Archduke Jan. In accord with Altgravine Maria Josepha for whose private quarters Russ’s historical paintings were intended, and to whom Hormayr had planned to dedicate the whole collection, he later expanded its scope with pictures illustrating romantic literary works. He commissioned them from the studios of his artist friends (Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Peter Fendi, Joseph von Führich). Some of the Rájec paintings inspired, through their subject matter, contemporary writers and musicians, for example, the famous composer Franz Schubert. While the term “dilettante” has negative connotations in modern languages, the original Italian verb dilettare derived from Latin means to please or to entertain, either oneself or others. From the 16th century onwards, “dilettantes” were amateur aristocratic musicians performing for their own entertainment, and the word later spread to other art disciplines. Art dilettantes produced works of art without any ambitions to have a professional career, only for their own pleasure and the pleasure of their families and friends. Art dilettantism in the sense of a noble pastime required certain social security, and as such was associated from the start with the aristocratic milieu. In addition, the mastering of drawing was considered a necessary part of the education of young aristocrats, as it was to provide them with the basics of architecture. In the course of the 18th century, this utilitarian concept gave way to free art that, after 1800, was also taught in the Salm-Reifferscheidt family in Rájec. Drawing lessons in aristocratic families were similar to those in art schools, proceeding from the imitation of simple shapes through the parts of figure to the whole one and to more complex compositions. Textbooks of varying quality that usually included pictorial models were used. Popular genres involved landscape painting enabling aristocratic cavaliers to capture places and sights visited in their travels. While the basic principles of drawings were taught by a tutor (Hoffmeister), in later phases this task went to practising artists. Around 1820, the Vienna painter Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld was in charge of art teaching of the young Salm-Reifferscheidts, while the next generation was tutored by the popular Prague landscapist Bedřich Havránek; his most talented pupil was Siegfried of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1835–1898) who created outstanding prints of professional standards. In the first half of the 19th century, aristocrats in the Czech lands counted among the leading patrons of science, culture and arts. Hugo II Karl Eduard Count of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1803–1888) started in 1826 his career as an official in Prague where he had settled after marrying Leopoldine née Princess of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim (1805–1878) and where he lived until the mid-1850s. He took an active part in the social and cultural life of the Czech metropolis, especially in the activities of the Society of the Patriotic Friends of the Arts and the affiliated Union of Fine Arts. Purchasing art at annual exhibitions in Prague, the count built up an exquisite collection of late-romanticist painting with emphasis on the contemporary landscape art, the major part of which has survived. Naturally, artists employed by the count in this period also came from the Prague milieu. The most important among them was Josef Führich, a young graduate of the Prague Academy who, apart from two series of drawings, The Elves and The Rune Mountain, created for Hugo II Karl Eduard a remarkable family portrait paraphrased two years later by the well-known Czech painter Josef Vojtěch Hellich. When refurbishing and decorating the newly purchased magnificent Salm-Reifferscheidt palace in Prague (now the Kounic Palace) in Panská Street, Hugo II Karl Eduard commissioned Prague artists whom he had met in the renowned art salon of Franz Count of Thun-Hohenstein. These included, first and foremost, Engelbert Seibertz, a German painter active in Prague in the 1840s, who produced for the Salm-Reifferscheidts several dozen paintings that were among his best. The Czech landscape artist Bedřich Havránek who also visited the Thun salon was responsible for art education of Hugo II Karl Eduard’s children and would regularly stay at the Salms’ Moravian estates. The Austrian author Ferdinand von Saar compared Elisabeth née Princess of Liechtenstein (1832–1894) in an obituary, with some exaggeration, to the renowned Florentine renaissance art patrons. However, the wife of Hugo III Karl Franz Count of Salm-Reifferscheidt (1832–1890) indeed belonged, in the 1870s and 1880s, with leading art patrons in the Habsburg monarchy. Although she came from the lesser, Moravský Krumlov branch of the Liechtenstein family, she generously picked up the threads of the Liechtenstein tradition of art patronage and collecting. In Vienna she visited the famous salon of Josephina and Franziska von Wertheimstein where she encountered prominent artists of the period. Elisabeth then started her own salon in Vienna and, in particular, in Blansko and with her husband would invite writers, musicians, and artists for hunts and summer stays in the heart of Moravian Switzerland (today’s Moravian karst). In this period, the Salm-Reifferscheidts enriched the family art collections with spectacular portraits painted by the most acknowledged portraitists of ruling and aristocratic dynasties (Heinrich von Angeli, Franz von Lenbach), as well as with works by artists who were family friends (Louis Gurlitt, Rudolf Carl Huber, Andreas Lach). These artist friends included, for example, the Norwegian landscapist Johan Nielssen who also painted in the vicinity of Rájec and Blansko, and the famous Vienna artist Hans Makart, “a prince among painters” whose works, regrettably, have not survived in the Rájec chateau. In the late 1870s the family of Hugo III Karl Franz met in Florence the famous Swiss symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin. Recently, one of two paintings by Böcklin that were originally the property of the Salm-Reifferscheidts has been rediscovered.
