Spatial and migration ecology of the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)

Abstract:

Obligátní hnízdní parazitismus kukačky obecné (Cuculus canorus) popsal již Aristoteles (350 př. n. l.). Od té doby je tato reprodukční strategie, kterou využívá až 109 ptačích druhů, podrobně studována. Ve své bakalářské práci jsem se zaměřila na porovnání využívání prostoru parazitickými druhy ptáků vzhledem k jejich parazitické strategii, míru věrnosti rodišti a hnízdišti kukačky obecné a její migrační ekologii. V rešeršní části jsem se věnovala kukačce obecné, která je typickým zástupcem hostitelského specialisty, a vlhovci hnědohlavému (Molothrus ater), který je naopak hostitelský generalista. Zdá se, že míra specializace hnízdních parazitů ovlivňuje mimo jiné velikost domovského okrsku, vztahy mezi jedinci během rozmnožování nebo počet parazitovaných hnízd. Ve vlastní analýze kroužkovacích dat z celoevropské databáze EURING jsem hodnotila prostorové aspekty ze zpětných hlášení okroužkovaných kukaček obecných. Záznamy 828 jedinců jsem zpracovávala v prostředí R. Při testování míry věrnosti hnízdišti a rodišti kukačky obecné se mé výsledky shodují s pracemi zaměřenými na různé druhy ptáků, kdy větší věrnost vykazují dospělí ptáci svému hnízdišti, než mladí ptáci svému rodišti. Medián disperzní vzdálenosti mláďat k rodišti v následujícím kalendářním roce je 15,1 km (n = 14) a po více letech 17,5 km (n = 28). Disperzní vzdálenost dospělců je následující kalendářní rok průměrně 1,5 km (n = 52), po více letech 5,3 km (n = 35). Průměrný směr podzimního tahu mláďat je 160,8° ± 0,9° (n = 57) a dospělců 132,6° ± 0,5° (n = 3). Z období jarního tahu je průměrný směr mláďat 332,7° ± 0,4° (n = 5) a dospělých jedinců 1,6° ± 0,6° (n = 3). Z oblasti subsaharské Afriky, kde tito ptáci zimují, pocházejí jenom dva záznamy, proto jsem nemohla analyzovat konkrétní oblasti zimoviště.

Abstract:

The obligatory brood parasitism of the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) has been described by Aristotle as early as in 350 BC. Since that time, this breeding strategy, which is used by about 109 different bird species, has been studied in detail. In my bachelor thesis, I compared space use by parasitic bird species with regard to their parasitic strategy, the rate of natal philopatry and breeding site fidelity of the common cuckoo and its migration ecology. In the review part, I focused on the common cuckoo, which is a typical host specialist, and on the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater), which represents a host generalist. It seems that the rate of specialization of the brood parasites affects, among other things, the size of their home range, the relationships between individual birds during breeding or the number of parasitized nests. In my own analysis of the ringing data from the EURING databank I evaluated the spatial patterns from re-encounters of ringed common cuckoos. I processed ring re-encounters of 828 individuals in R environment. My results concerning the rate of natal philopatry and breeding fidelity of the common cuckoo agree with other studies on various bird species: adult birds are more faithful to their breeding sites than juveniles to their natal sites. The median dispersion distance of juveniles to their birthplace was 15.1 km (n = 14) in the year following ringing and 17.5 km (n = 28) after more years. Dispersion distance of adult birds was on average 1.5 km (n = 52) in the year following ringing and 5.3 km (n = 35) after more years. The average direction of the autumn migration was 160.8° ± 0.9° (n = 57) in juveniles and 132.6° ± 0.5° (n = 3) in adults. The average direction of spring migration was 332.7° ± 0.4° (n = 5) in juveniles and 1.6 ± 0.6 (n = 3) in adults. There were only two ring re-encounters from sub-Saharan Africa, which made any analysis from the wintering grounds impossible.
