From Unique to Mass: Which Way the Mainstream Absorbs the Alternative Culture?

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se snaží pomocí teorií autorů jako je Dick Hebdige, Steven Miles, David Muggleton nebo Sarah Thornton interpretovat způsoby, jakými pohlcuje mainstream alternativní kulturu. Práce se zabývá subkulturou mladých a střetem dvou kultur – alternativní a masové – a jejich vzájemného propojení a ovlivnění. Interpretace pohlcování alternativní kultury kulturou masovou je zasazena do diskurzu o subkulturní a post-subkulturní perspektivě, ukazuje odlišnost přístupů těchto dvou perspektiv a kriticky je srovnává. Subkulturní teorie popisuje mládež v opozici k mainstreamu, post-subkulturní teorie ji popisuje jako jeho součást. Práce popisuje několik procesů, jakými mainstream alternativní kulturu pohlcuje. Práce se opírá především o teorie Hebdige, o jeho interpretaci stylu jako významové praktiky a teorii inkorporace. Způsob inkorporace je popsán na příkladu punkové subkultury, která je ideální ukázkou toho, jak dokáže mainstream pohltit kulturu, která k němu stojí v opozici. Mezi další procesy, které jsou v práci uvedeny, patří mainstreamová mládež a konformní nekonformisté, o kterých se zmiňuje Michaela Pyšňáková, ztráta autenticity, o níž píše Thornton a Muggleton, role individualismu, vliv medií nebo závislost na trhu.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis tries, by means of teories of authors such as Dick Hebdige, Steven Miles, David Muggleton or Sarah Thornton, to interpret the ways in which the mainstream absorbs the alternative culture. The thesis deals with subculture of the young and with conflict of alternative and mass cultures and their mutual connection and influencing. Interpretation of the absorption of the alternative culture by the mass culture is given in the frame of the discourse upon the subculture and the post-subculture perspectives, shows the difference of approach between these two perspectives and critically compares them. The subculture theory describes the youth in oposition to the mainstream, the post-subculture theory desribes the youth as its part. The thesis deals with several processes by which the mainstream absorbs the alternative culture. It is primarily based on the theories of Hebdige and on his interpretation of the style as a signifying practices and on the theory of incorporation. The way of incorporation is described by an example of punk subculture which is a perfect illustration of how the mainstream can absorb the culture which is in opposition to it. Among other processes which are included in this thesis belong the mainstream youth and the conformist nonconformists about whom Michaela Pyšňáková refers, loss of authenticity about which Thornton and Muggleton write, the role of individualism, the influence of media or the dependence on the market.
