Crystal chemistry and IR spectroscopy of nominally anhydrous minerals

Abstract:

Tato doktorská práce sestává z kompendia tří článků, jejichž společnou charakteristikou bylo zhodnocení obsahu „vody“ a způsobu jejího zabudování v krystalové mřížce různých nominálně bezvodých minerálů – barytu, xenotimu a wulfenitu. Čtvrtý článek představuje komplexní zhodnocení charakteru vzorků vesuvianu z typové lokality Somma-Vesuvio, což dosud nebylo učiněno. Výzkum každého ze tří zmíněných nominálně bezvodých minerálů přinesl jedinečné výsledky. V barytu byly nalezeny stopy vody v podobě dvou typů moleku H2O s odlišnou strukturní orientací, okupující vakance po atomech Ba. Oba typy H2O molekul jsou pomocí tepla velmi obtížně odstranitelné. Jeví se, že v supergenně vzniklých barytech je obsah krystalově vázané vody daleko nižší, než v barytech hydrotermálních. V rámci xenotimu-(Y) byl popsán dosud v IR spektroskopických kruzích ne zcela všeobecně známý problém koincidence absorpčních peaků způsobených přítomností stop vodíku a absorpcí vlivem nízkoenergetických přechodů elektronů ve 4f orbitalech lanthanoidů, substituujících atomy Y, z nichž je problematické především Dy. Pomocí syntéz umělých monokrystalových standardů, dotovaných relevantními REE, jež byly v přírodních vzorcích xenotimu zjištěny, bylo možno odlišit oba typy signálu a charakterizovat OH defekty přítomné ve struktuře daného minerálu. Přírodní wulfenit vykazuje charakteristickou dvojici OH absorpčních peaků v IR spektru. Tvar spektrální křivky je však dosti blízký absopcím OH skupin v sekundárních minerálech především ze skupiny alunit-crandallit, jmenovitě jarositu a plumbogummitu. Po zjištění zjevných rozdílů chování OH skupin ve wulfenitu a v obou uměle syntetizovaných sekundárních fázích při zahřívání bylo možno potvrdit vazbu OH skupin přímo na strukturu wulfenitu, kde okupují vakance po atomech Pb coby intersticiální OH skupina, jejíž kyslík přispívá ke koordinačnímu polyedru sousedního atomu Pb. Kromě charakterizace OH skupin byl pomocí optické absorpční spektroskopie syntetizovaných monokrystalů i přírodních vzorků potvrzen původ vzniku výrazného zbarvení daného wulfenitu vlivem přítomnosti stop iontů Cr6+, substituujících atomy Mo6+ a dále zjištěna přítomnost stop REE ve struktuře přírodních vzorků, jmenovitě Nd a Sm. Posledním článkem je souhrnná charakterizace vesuvianu z lokality Somma-Vesuvio (Itálie) po stránce strukturní, IR spektroskopické a krystalochemické. Bylo dle očekávání zjištěno, že vlivem vysoké teploty vzniku není patrno snížení symetrie struktury daného minerálu z prostorové grupy P4/nnc, ke kterému dochází u nížeteplotních vzorků vlivem tzv. „tyčinkové polytypie“. Vesuviany z Vesuvu jsou relativně bohaté Fe, které vykazuje proměnlivé koncentrace, chudé B (wiluitovou komponentou) a vykazují zvýšené obsahy F. Výsledky obsahu OH, získané pomocí IR spektroskopie a DTA velmi dobře souhlasí.

Abstract:

This PhD. thesis consists of a group of three published papers, which all concern the evaluation of „water“ content and the crystal-chemical character of its presence in the structure of selected nominally anhydrous minerals - barite, xenotime and wulfenite. The fourth paper delas with the detailed evaluation of vesuvianite from its type locality, the Somma-Vesuvio volcano in Italy. The study of each of the three nominally anhydrous minerals brought unique results. Two types of H2O molecules with a different structural orientation have been determined in the structure of barite, where they occupy vacant Ba sites. Both types of H2O are very difficult to remove by heat treatment. It is apparent that supergenic barites contain much less H2O than their hydrothermal counterparts. A phenomenon, which is not commonly taken into consideration as an artefact in FTIR spectroscopic studies was discovered in xenotime-(Y), where OH absorption bands are overlapped by much stronger bands due to low-energetic 4f electronic transitions in lanthanides, which substitute for Y, Dy being the most problematic element. Comparison with synthesised single crystals doped with relevant REEs allowed to discriminate between both spectral contributions and describe the character of OH defects in xenotime. Natural wulfenite displays a typical OH absorption pattern consisting of two broad bands. This pattern, however, is very similar by shape to OH absorptions caused by some secondary minerals, mainly from the alunite – crandallite group, specifically jarosite and plumbogummite. After discovering significant differences in the thermal behaviour of bands present in wulfenite and both mentioned synthetically prepared phases during annealing, the absorption phenomena in wulfenite could be attributed to the presence of intrinsic OH groups, which occupy vacancies after Pb atoms. The OH oxygen atom contributes to the coordination sphere of the neighbouring Pb atom. Apart from characterizing the OH defects, a revision of the causes of the often striking colours of wulfenite was done by means of optical absorption spectroscopy using natural samples and synthesized standards. The presence of traces of Cr6+ substituting for Mo6+ was determined as the main reason of colour in wulfenite. The presence of structurally incorporated REEs, namely Nd and Sm, was also established. The fourth and last paper concerns the characterization of vesuvianite from its type locality, Somma-Vesuvio in Italy, regarding structural, IR spectroscopic and crystal-chemical aspects. As can be expected for vesuvianite formed at high temperature, no symmetry reduction from the space group P4/nnc, observed in low-temperature samples due to the so-called „rod polytypism“, was observed. Vesuvianite from the Somma-Vesuvio volcanic complex is relatively rich in Fe, the contents of which fluctuate from sample to sample, low on B (wiluite component) and enriched in F. The OH contents derived from IR spectroscopy and DTA are in perfect agreement.
