An analysis of the status of African Americans in the U.S. labor market in the 1960s and 1970s

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou a zhodnocením postavení Afroameričanů na trhu práce v USA především v 60. a 70. letech 20. století. V teoretické části jsou vysvětleny vybrané ekonomické teorie vztahující se k tématu, dále i opatření a zákony týkající se Afroameričanů a amerického trhu práce a hospodářská situace Spojených států především v 60. a 70. letech 20. století. V praktické části analyzuji trh práce s důrazem na pozici Afroameričanů v průběhu 60. a 70. let 20. století. Klíčové je testování platnosti vědecké hypotézy ve znění: opatření federální vlády zejména z poloviny 60. let 20. století měly dle analýzy vybraných ukazatelů dlouhodobější pozitivní dopady na postavení Afroameričanů na trhu práce. K ověření hypotézy je využita analýza časových řad míry nezaměstnanosti, dále zaměstnanosti, průměrných mezd a dosaženého vzdělání. Hypotéza byla na základě analýzy částečně potvrzena. V práci se zabývám také výzkumnými otázkami, jak se vyvíjela míra nezaměstnanosti Afroameričanů na trhu práce v USA. Dále, jaký byl vývoj průměrných mezd Afroameričanů ve srovnání s průměrnými mzdami v celkové populaci a jak se projevil první ropný šok na trhu práce z pohledu Afroameričanů. V závěru práce porovnávám 60. a 70. léta 20. století se situací po roce 2000, kdy docházím k závěrům, že i přes pokroky, kterých Afroameričané dosáhli v 60. a 70. letech, přetrvávala jejich míra nezaměstnanosti na dvojnásobku míry nezaměstnanosti bílých Američanů a jejich průměrné mzdy jsou stále nižší než průměrné mzdy v celkové populaci.

Abstract:

The bachelor‘s thesis analyze and evaluates the position of the African Americans in the U.S. labour market, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. The theoretical part explains selected economic theories related to the topic as well as orders and acts concerning the African Americans and the U.S. labor market and the economic situation of the United States primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. In the practical part, I analyze the labor market with emphasis on the position of the African Americans during the 1960s and 1970s. The important part is to test the validity of the scientific hypothesis as stated: the actions of the federal government especially from the mid-1960s had long-term positive effects on the labor market position of the African Americans according to the analysis of selected indicators. Time series analysis of unemployment rates, as well as employment, average wages, and educational attainment have been used to test the hypothesis. Based on the analysis, the hypothesis was partially confirmed. In this paper, I also address the research questions of how the unemployment rate of African Americans in the U.S. labor market has evolved. Further, the evolution of average wages for African Americans compared to average wages in the general population and how the first oil shock affected the labor market from the perspective of the African Americans. At the end of the thesis, I compare the situation in the 1960s and 1970s with the situation after 2000 and conclude that despite the progress the African Americans made in the 1960s and 1970s, their unemployment rate has been still twice that of white Americans and their average wages have still been lower than the average wages in the general population.
